Images from EuroGames 2008 opening

During some moments, it evoked memories of the Olympics. The setting, the marching in of the athletes, and some spectacular visuals.

The presentation by Àngel Llàcer was humourous at times, and speeches, although perhaps too long and sober for an event like this, were well-crafted and provided much food for thought. It was just too bad that hardly any of the participants understood it as no translation for the largely Catalan presentation was offered.

The organisers estimate that 85% of EuroGames participants are from outside Spain but less than a tenth of the opening programme was offered in English. Couldn't a more appropriate occasion have been chosen for a Catalan lesson? A great number of athletes walking out certainly thought so.

As with personal hygiene, although you wouldn't necessarily advertise it, you notice when it's missing. So it stings when we're told that we're a humourless bunch here in Catalunya.
