New York Style

There's no shortage of self-proclaimed New York-style restaurants popping up around town. Which as a description is about as useful as saying that a place is somewhere on Gran Via.

Sex & The City-style is of course what's usually meant: equal emphasis on décor and food (which, judging by the pleasing but anonymous interior, won't exactly overwhelm your palate), and mostly accompanied by a cocktail menu that will allow you to get slushed before, during and/or after your meal. But the trait that we value most, is the user-friendly hours.

Up in Zona Alta, Rouras offers all-day breakfast in its bright glass box on Diagonal, while on Passeig de Gracia, newcomer Brown 33 matches Tenorio's continuous noon-to-midnight kitchen hours. Fantastic if, like me, you're one of those whose hunger won't respect established meal times.

And if you prefer liquid over solids, Cata 1.81's off-shoot in Born, 9 Cata opens its competent cocktail bar for after-work drinks at 7:30pm. That should leave you as carefree as Samantha come dinner time.

Rouras, Diagonal 593 - 93 495 0509
Brown 33, Passeig de Gracia 33 - 93 467 5247
9 Cata, Comercial 9, Born - 93 268 1728

ALSO IN EAT & DRINK

  • Eating Green

Last year I read somewhere that eating out is environmentally friendlier than cooking yourself. I felt vindicated: No longer a lazy cow for refusing to go anywhere near the stove. No, I was just being a responsible citizen of Mother Nature.

  • A Smile Is Your Personal Welcome Mat

While Japanese food has somehow managed to establish itself as being somewhat upscale in our part of the world, there's no such pretence with Chinese. Trust Grupo Tragaluz to change that perception.

  • No Dish

I have an ‘aggressively sexy' (she takes issue with the word slutty) Italian friend who, for as long as I've known her, has been husband hunting. Everybody else's, that is. And that's how I have it with dinner parties: I love them, but at other people's houses.

  • All Included

Mention the word "value" and I'm haunted by traumatic flashbacks of bargain basement all-inclusive package holidays. It's an outdated impression, of course, as good hotel dining has become easier on the wallet as well as better quality.

  • Young and Beautiful

Undue senior citizen entitlement can really get me up in arms. So I'm a great fan of the pay-your-age initiative by Ada Parellada's homely classic.
