Swing It

Burlesque. Stylish, glam and entertaining at its best, but too often little more than ropey acts and too much motion in the sea of flesh on display to make even the most weathered sailor feel seasick.

Thankfully, the laws of gravity keep the more unfit from jumping on the pole dancing wagon, but when the guiding mantra is voluptuous, curvaceous and audacious, everybody seems to have a free pass to air their sequined smalls. Clearly we’re not too unhappy that this retro fad has passed Barcelona by - so far.

Nothing lasts this long without good reason, and London’s Lady Luck Club is one of those. Every month it continues to draw a crowd dolled up in vintage '30s, '40s and '50s gear - a no jeans and trainers door policy is in place - ready for blues boppers, swing and jive.

The DJ and head honcho behind the night, El Nino, brings it all to Apolo’s Nuggets club tomorrow, accompanied by the delightful Miss Polly Rae, who’s putting on her classic striptease and fan dance. Do dress up for the occasion but, please, remember that dressing up doesn’t have to mean dressing down.

  • Uptown Downtown

I remember when the bars in El Gòtico were for guiris, uptown for the pijos, Port Olímpic for the garullos, Raval for the adventurous, Gayxample for the gays, and everybody else nibbling and sampling as they saw fit.

  • Going Solo

If you've been to Bailén 22 after it reopened as Lotus, then you'll understand why I got a bit excited when learning that women, of the paying kind, would be welcomed at another former puticlub.

  • That's All Folks

Powerful imagery in HD: risk, vertigo, bloody noses, fully-branded choppers and snow, snow and more snow. It's a curious thing, sharing the snowboarding adventure with these kids on and off the big screen.

  • Make-over

Trying out a "new" bar in Barcelona is rather like going on a date with Ana Obregón: you can be sure that you'll have seen the place before and that it'll since have had a nip and tuck or two. You just won't know whether the change has been for the better or worse.
