Home Suite Home

Last weekend I ended up in the hotel room of a visiting friend and I thought how nice it'd be if my bedroom was like that. Besides the fact that someone else would be making the bed, it didn't feel like a hotel room - it felt like home, just a better version.

It didn't hurt the cause that my friend is well off - it wasn't a Holiday Inn - but the line between hotels and homes has been blurring for a while. We now don't only check in for holidays and nookie on the side, but have dinner, drinks and good times at hotels in our home town. And increasingly imitate their interiors at home.

To five-star your home, you'd think that Hostelco, the hotel fair starting tomorrow, would be a great place to get some inspiration, but it seems like it'll mostly be call buttons and serving trays on show. Don't despair, though. Many hotels - including W that will open in Bofill's sail in Barceloneta - now sell their goods online.

Stock up on fluffy robes, pillows and toiletries, of course, but also bath scales, furniture and even shower heads. The bed, however, you'll have to make yourself.

  • Harry new wear

By midnight fingers, still sticky from the grapes, will be hammering out wishes of "harry new wear" and worse by the hundreds. Clearly some help is needed. And thankfully it's now being offered

  • Season's Greetings

The annual batch of Christmas cards has started to clog up my letter box, reminding me that, like dinner parties and pension plans, this is another grown-up thing that I haven't quite mastered yet.

  • Not on the Coffee Table

Every fall the publishers bombard us with books to suit every taste, just in time to be wrapped for Christmas.

  • A Stretch

I wouldn't say that I'm lazy, but physical activity has just never held much appeal. So I figure that if I were ever to take up a sport, it'd be yoga - the only discipline where lying down and breathing can pass itself off as exercise.

  • Buying Time

I'm hopeful about this new concierge service that's fully bookable via email or phone. In addition to standard tasks like personal shopping or getting reservations, they'll also get the dog walked and fed (at least the four-legged ones) or redecorate your home.
