Say Cheese

Weddings, parties, special occasions, I always bring my camera, hoping to capture those Kodak moments. Click, and I have another blurry, out-of-frame, out-of-focus photo saved onto the memory card.

For all the additional megapixels, smile detection, and foolproof-ness that technology has brought us, my photos haven't gotten any better, I now just end up with more of them. Folders full of that's-just-after-they-kissed, she's-much-prettier-in-real-life and but-it-was-sharp-in-the-preview photos.

Thus all the more to admire about the winners of the World Press Photo awards that are exhibited at CCCB from tomorrow. More than just being at the right place and time, they somehow managed to snap some outstanding instants of the events, stories and themes that made news during 2007.

Seeing the images in a large format warrants a visit by itself, but it's also a great reminder of some of last year's most memorable news stories. Even if they don't include Britney's shaving meltdown, Anna Nicole Smith or Paris doing time.

This Friday I'm reminded of the real reason that I love this hood, as some 20 shops, studios and galleries along the Lledó-Palma Sant Just corridor open their doors to the public.
