Shopping for Love

Absolutely. No. Sleepovers. Not commitment-phobic, but several friends of mine enforce this policy when they pull during the hot months. Without a/c, spooning in August can frankly make your mother's menopausal hot flashes seem trivial.

But now, as every year, after a few weeks of chilly weather, mating season's kicked in and people are shopping for love again. Not as literally as in New York, where supermarkets are prime hunting grounds. Feel the melons for ripeness, check out the meat specials, and bring home a date.

Admittedly it does sound kind of exciting. But from personal experience I can tell you that it's rather impractical. Put something on offer in your cart, and you're labeled a cheapskate. Anything family-oriented, and you can brace yourself for a lonely night.

So if you're prone to buying in bulk, may we instead suggest this weekend's Salon Singles. Seduction techniques, social skills workshops, and dance lessons. The heavy artillery. But tread carefully, or you'll be shopping for two by next weekend.

Salón Singles - Saturday 22-Sunday 23 November
Museo Marítimo, Drassanes
Saturday 11-20h, Sunday 11-19h. EUR 6-10

  • Harry new wear

By midnight fingers, still sticky from the grapes, will be hammering out wishes of "harry new wear" and worse by the hundreds. Clearly some help is needed. And thankfully it's now being offered

  • Season's Greetings

The annual batch of Christmas cards has started to clog up my letter box, reminding me that, like dinner parties and pension plans, this is another grown-up thing that I haven't quite mastered yet.

  • Not on the Coffee Table

Every fall the publishers bombard us with books to suit every taste, just in time to be wrapped for Christmas.

  • A Stretch

I wouldn't say that I'm lazy, but physical activity has just never held much appeal. So I figure that if I were ever to take up a sport, it'd be yoga - the only discipline where lying down and breathing can pass itself off as exercise.

  • Buying Time

I'm hopeful about this new concierge service that's fully bookable via email or phone. In addition to standard tasks like personal shopping or getting reservations, they'll also get the dog walked and fed (at least the four-legged ones) or redecorate your home.
