Quite Normal

Last year, during a particularly barren spell on the romantic scene, I decided to dabble a bit in internet dating. What surprised me was that, while some bragged about the size of their wallet (SugardaddyBCN) or endowment (Tripod25, not referring to his age), the majority preferred to describe themselves as 'normal'.

Now, I'm sure that by ‘normal' they probably meant ‘not freaky', yet to me it shouted ‘mediocre and boring'. But that's just how my mind works. You say 'unique' as in one-of-a-kind; I think 'weird'. And if you say 'SoHo' to imply Manhattan cool, I can't help but think 'bland, pretentious tourist hell'.

Which is a bit unfortunate, because the new SOHO Sushi & Drinks bar and restaurant in El Born is actually quite pleasant. It may look more Chelsea or Hell's Kitchen than SoHo, but the owners have nonetheless done a fine job redecorating the former Thai Café.

Truth to be told, you could go to Shunka for better Japanese or to Miu for better value, but neither offers a bar service as competent as SOHO - which as good a reason as any to visit the place. In fact, it could even warrant a second date.

SOHO Sushi & Drinks - now open
Comerç 27, Born - 93 268 2577
Tuesday-Sunday 20h-02h (Friday-Saturday until 03h)
EUR 30-40 per person

ALSO IN EAT & DRINK

  • Working It

While it used to be nearly impossible to locate a decent eatery open in high summer, this year most restaurants have cut short their holiday breaks. And this recent opening hardly closes at all.

  • Drinking Like Fish

At a first glance, it looks like yet another formula-driven place - a formula that includes an interior by Lazaro Rosa-Violán, sushi and, sure enough, cocktails - but, as the name allures to, the fish is what really does set it apart.

  • A Summer Grilling

The restaurant at Grec is now back and this year opens not only on nights of performances, but lets you enjoy the flame-grilled delights every night until August 2.

  • Photos: Bar Velódromo re-opening

Carles Abellán and Jordi Hereu, the mayor, re-opened the legendary place in front of an invited audience, of which many appeared to be regulars from the early stages of the bar that opened for the first time back in 1933.

  • Waiting for Veló

The place has been restored to its original glory by Moritz and now opens with super chef Carles Abellán overseeing the kitchen with classic Catalan bistro dishes. The original art deco feel has been revived, maintaining many of the original design elements.
