Collectable

When my grandmother died, the entire family descended like vultures to get their paws on her antiques and collectables. A few hours and several catfights later, the house was cleared of everything, except for the sizeable Lladró collection. Some things, no matter how ludicrously expensive, are best begged off.
What exactly it is, that gravitates women of a certain age towards these sappy figurines, has never been quite clear to me. The quaint scenes of bygone eras depicted in milky whites? Or is it simply the curse of gifting: for the lack of better ideas, "let's just get granny something from Lladró"?
Admittedly, their Re:Cyclos series is not to be sniffed at - collaborations with hot names like Bodo Sperlein, Jaime Hayón, and British design studio, Committee have produced some decidedly delectable lamps and chandeliers. but even so, I'm loving Eider Corral's poking fun at the brand with her New Salvation Army, a limited edition series of fake Lladrós.
The iPod-ed wonders can be seen at BOO over the next couple of weeks, and, with luxury seemingly going out of style, couldn't have come at a better time. Even Nana would've asked us to give her collection a make-over with a permanent marker.
New Salvation Army by Eider Corral
Opening at 19h today. Until March 12.
