Open For Business

We have one of Barcelona's best patisseries right next to the office. The only problem is that it's not open when I arrive for work, it shuts for lunch, and by the time I leave my desk, it has invariably already closed for the day.

A year ago I would've called such hours commercial suicide for a pastry shop, but I suppose unemployment has now grown sufficiently high for brisk business during normal office hours. So it's nice to see a growing number of all-day hangouts that can accommodate desk-bound wage slaves like me.

Last year, for example, take-out and café Green&Wich opened on Casanova, swiftly followed by the slick cocktail bar and Asian-Mediterranean fusion restaurant Primario on Plaça Doctor Letamendi. And just a fortnight ago, the Lexington café-lounge bar opened on Muntaner, serving up NY-style comfort foods like quesadillas, burgers and Caesar salads.

These places open early for breakfast, stay open through lunch (or brunch on weekends) and on to dinner and, for some, cocktails. And given the choice between a meringue and a cocktail, I'm pointing at the glass. Any time of the day.

ALSO IN EAT & DRINK

  • Working It

While it used to be nearly impossible to locate a decent eatery open in high summer, this year most restaurants have cut short their holiday breaks. And this recent opening hardly closes at all.

  • Drinking Like Fish

At a first glance, it looks like yet another formula-driven place - a formula that includes an interior by Lazaro Rosa-Violán, sushi and, sure enough, cocktails - but, as the name allures to, the fish is what really does set it apart.

  • A Summer Grilling

The restaurant at Grec is now back and this year opens not only on nights of performances, but lets you enjoy the flame-grilled delights every night until August 2.

  • Photos: Bar Velódromo re-opening

Carles Abellán and Jordi Hereu, the mayor, re-opened the legendary place in front of an invited audience, of which many appeared to be regulars from the early stages of the bar that opened for the first time back in 1933.

  • Waiting for Veló

The place has been restored to its original glory by Moritz and now opens with super chef Carles Abellán overseeing the kitchen with classic Catalan bistro dishes. The original art deco feel has been revived, maintaining many of the original design elements.
