Do Me a Favour?

This week Bauhaus started to accept pesetas again. It's a cheap PR move but to be able to buy anything, I may actually have to start looking around for some mislaid pelas and duros, because I've got no euros and there just aren't any circulating.

I tell ya, economic activity seems to have been reduced to bartering, with nobody paying with actual money. Want a haircut? If you can fix a moto in return, no problem. Need a roof over your head? OK, but be ready to do the nasty.

That may all work fine, as long as you've got some skills or other, um, talents in demand, but with employers like British Airways now asking employees to work for free, then it starts to become really challenging to earn your daily bread. The favour that pays your rent may stuff your mouth, but won't fill your stomach. Greater self-sufficiency beckons.

Learning how to grow a home garden on your balcony or terrace at Horturbà's summer gardening courses is a start. The course fee is 40 euros, but who knows what the instructor might be willing to accept in lieu?

Home gardening courses by  Horturbà
July 7, 14 and 21 or July 9, 10, 16 and 17
EUR 40. More info on the web.

  • Talent Development

The problem with talent, just like ugly newborns, is that so few people are willing to tell you the truth about them. If you're in advertising you'll at least have a relatively inexpensive option of finding out.

The start of the summer season is as official as it gets. That also means that it's now time to make some tough decisions.

It's easy to be cynical about Sant Jordi but I actually quite like the day. Just walk straight past the street vendors, and past good old Flores Navarro, too.

  • Body Beautiful

So, Dove is once again looking for chubby chicks for a commercial. Oh sorry. Zaftig? Generously proportioned? Ugh, no, REAL women. Which explains the re-occurrence of ads with models who don't seem to say no to seconds.

UJ News Update: At the emergency international WIN (Women's Intelligence Network) summit held yesterday, the British contingent unanimously voted that the 'credit crunch' will not be accepted as a valid excuse for ignoring Valentine's Day.
