Loud and Proud

It was never going to please everybody -  “too activist”, “too commercial”, “too frivolous”, it was mumbled - but, in our humble opinion, the inaugural Pride Barcelona did well, even without the crisis-stricken Matinée Group.

Gay pride has traditionally been celebrated in Barcelona with a funeral-like gathering at Plaça Universitat, but this year adopted the more colourful model seen abroad: a carnival feel with loud costumes and louder floats - light on political messages, heavy on celebrating diversity.

Sure, some things could’ve been done better - the main stage programme was a let-down, for example - but there were more people attending than ever before and the floats were fun and appropriately OTT. A promising platform to build on.

As for Matinée, we were sorry to learn that it’s been hit hard by the financial crisis - so hard that it couldn’t pony up the cash for a float of its own in Sunday’s parade.

  • Over The Moon

No longer distracted by the sticky, sweet-talking Queen of Pop, let's turn our attention back to the King, and pay homage one last time. Mindless and too late? Hey, the dude's without a brain and remains unburied, so that would almost be appropriate.

  • Recreative

Lots of impressive creative talent, some in finding constructive feedback to, ehem, less impressive work, but mostly on show in the portfolio of young hopefuls.

  • Shutter Bugged

The masterminds behind PHotoEspaña and the annual cult mag Matador, marked their 15th anniversary by opening a Barcelona branch, complete with gallery, bookshop, café and an event space.

  • Hoss Call

As catalogues go, Daniel Riera’s work with Tamsin Egerton for Hoss Intropia was real fine. But his exhibition in Hoss’ private showroom shows why he’s one of our favourite photographers these days.

  • Precocious

Part of me wants to admire these gifted youngsters, but mostly I'm enraged with jealousy that these kids - some young enough to proffer me their seat on the metro - have more talent than I'll ever have.
