Breaking the Mould

Prior to actually visiting the US, my overriding impression of the country was essentially formed by what I’d seen on telly. Growing up with Dallas, Loveboat and Michael Knight, I knew that it was a country of big hair, talking cars and camp high drama.

But before I got enthralled by Sue Ellen’s ability to knock them back, it was the Little House on the Prairie that had me glued to the box. Many afternoons were spent running down the nearby hill, arms flailing in the air, reenacting the opening credits. (I didn’t grow up in a very happening town, okay?)

What really got my attention, however, were the scenes showing country fairs with show ponies, prize pumpkins and pie contests. Oh, the excitement and competitiveness of it all! And if that kind of thing floats your boat, then Duduá’s fantasy cake contest is back on Saturday.

No ponies, but cakes in all shapes and forms. Bring your own creation, if bakery is your thing, or just sample the efforts of others. Creativity beats tastiness in the rule book, though, so like Bobby, the prettiest could well be the dullest too.

  • Harry new wear

By midnight fingers, still sticky from the grapes, will be hammering out wishes of "harry new wear" and worse by the hundreds. Clearly some help is needed. And thankfully it's now being offered

  • Season's Greetings

The annual batch of Christmas cards has started to clog up my letter box, reminding me that, like dinner parties and pension plans, this is another grown-up thing that I haven't quite mastered yet.

  • Not on the Coffee Table

Every fall the publishers bombard us with books to suit every taste, just in time to be wrapped for Christmas.

  • A Stretch

I wouldn't say that I'm lazy, but physical activity has just never held much appeal. So I figure that if I were ever to take up a sport, it'd be yoga - the only discipline where lying down and breathing can pass itself off as exercise.

  • Buying Time

I'm hopeful about this new concierge service that's fully bookable via email or phone. In addition to standard tasks like personal shopping or getting reservations, they'll also get the dog walked and fed (at least the four-legged ones) or redecorate your home.
