UJ Ibiza: AUGUST 2013

Mid August! How have we got here already? Once again, the summer is flying by and can't say we are happy about it! But what a summer it's been. We've been hearing good things about the new Ushuaïa Tower – intimate pool by day (where they don't rip the deck chairs out from under you the second it hits 5PM a lá the original Ushuaïa) and we've also been hearing great things about Ushuaïa's Saturday party, Ants. Love it when we see an underdog break through. Speaking of underdog, sad news in yesterday that Booom!'s lease has been revoked as of November. Well, it was fun while it lasted and we have no doubt that Danny and Mark will be on to bigger and better things. Lastly – it's almost the bank holiday weekend, hurray! You know what that means: Groucho pop up, DRIIS at Pikes' final party, Love Brunch and Boujis B2B, SACCA, Solomun + 1, DC10 and the requisite trip to Formentera. Relax? See you on the White Isle.

Clandesdining club

Join this secret supper society

Founded by three friends passionate about food, the Clandesdining Club was inspired by an old photo from a Pacha book of a long table in a field, full of people eating, laughing and having fun. Hosted in off-the-beaten-track locations around the island, last month's inaugural event featured organic lamb marinated with wild fennel pollen and parsley seed, an Ibiza trifle with freshly picked berries and more – for 66 guests.

SACCA REVIEW

New sushi heaven opens to rave reviews

We've been waiting for SACCA since February, when rumours first started circulating that El Chiringuito's Jonathan Thorogood and ex-DJ manager and TV presenter George Lamb had taken over Aura. After typical Balearic-style delays, it finally opened last month and is quickly becoming the most popular modern Asian restaurant on the island, boasting an authentic dining experience in a beautiful setting, with flawless service and exciting flavours. Head chef Lex Hauser (who came straight from Shanghai to helm the kitchen) has created a spectacular menu – think squid tossed in salt and Szechuan pepper, deliciously tender beef tataki, and roasted pork belly in black vinegar, caramel and chilli. There's also sushi, courtesy of Nobuhisa Takahashi, formerly of NOBU, and even oyster shooters! SACCA is clearly already living up to its reputation as the island's latest hotspot.

BOUJIS

London, take two – by night

If you hit up Love Brunch and want to keep things going past sunset, book a table at Boujis for the tenth edition of the members' club's Ibiza party. This year expect more of the same – buckets of Moët and Belvedere, outdoor dancing and white wares – and they've upped the ante on production, so expect some surprises on the night. They're keeping mums on the DJ names for now, but we wouldn't be surprised if Andrew Dax, Zeb Wayne, Klaus De Macedo or Rob Marmot turned up. Book now and wait for your text on the day with details. Consider it a posh Mediterranean rave.

RALPH'S ROUNDUP – THE IBIZA 2013 LOWDOWN

Our man about town and all-round music sage looks forward to September and gives us some highlights to date

Smile, breathe deep and take that first step off the plane because September in Ibiza really is the best time to get your club on. From the start of the season's closing month the roads are less congested, the clubs are less packed, everyone knows what they're doing and the summer anthems have already been decided. In short, it's the best time to head out for a week of fun, sunshine and closing parties with your closest friends. At the end of the month is when the techno elite head back for one final swansong, with the Cocoon closing on September 30 sure to be followed by an after-party of epic proportions, and Hawtin's ENTER.bound to be followed by a beach or villa carry-on that Kenneth Williams would be proud of.

And what is there to be said for the 2013 season? Well, for one thing, Carl Cox, Solomun, Jamie Jones and Richie Hawtin proved that superstardom was a guarantee for road-blocked parties, and Pharrell Williams' appearance at Ushuaïa proved that Ibiza still loves a hip hop guest if they can deliver live – and Williams most definitely delivered. One of the best after-hours of the season came courtesy of a private yoga retreat (as George Michael once sang, if you were there, you know) and from July onwards, the glorious sunshine mixed with deep house across the island. Meanwhile, the biggest techno moment of the month came for Ricardo Villalobos' birthday at Cocoon on August 5, during the infamous 'Lion' week, where he not only played his best set of the season but also had the entire crowd singing happy birthday to him. And then promptly played his remix of Beck - Cellphone's Dead as the last tune of the night. Magic.

Radio One weekend also proved as hectic as ever, with Nervo, Solomun, Pete Tong and George Fitzgerald all bringing the energy to Ushuaïa and Hot Since 82 providing the peak-time club moment at Sankeys on Friday night. Biggest moment of the night? Benga dropping R Kelly. Cue mass singalong. And while we're hoping that the TOWIE brigade don't continue to spoil DC10 and Ushuaïa for everyone else, what defines 2013 is a sense of pent-up excitement and occasional disappointment. Frustratingly, Booom! didn't open until midway through the season and across the island some of the smaller brands have struggled to translate the UK hype into Balearic gold dust.

It was also the summer of swaps, with Dice playing at DC10 for the first time in seven years and Carl Cox playing for Music On for the first time ever. All this can only be a good thing. But when the dust has settled, let's see who comes back for the next round in 2014. See you down the front.

Friday, August 23
Clandestin at Space. The Terraza will feature an energized Felix Da Housecat with his first-ever Ibiza residency plus A-Trak and a DJ set from the on-point mix master known as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. A new party to watch on Friday nights.

Friday, August 23
Le Grand Bazaar. It's going to be pretty hard to beat Pharrell Williams, but Le Grand Bazaar has Pete Tong and a seemingly rejuvenated Luciano for one night only.

Saturday, August 24
Zoo Project. One for the younger crowd, the Zoo Project features Spencer Parker, Terry Francis (Funk & Soul Set), Lando Kal, Samuel Deep and Evan Baggs. Please note the party starts at 4:30PM!

Thursday, September 12
Dirtybird closing party at Sankeys with Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin & Eats Everything, Leroy Peppers, Catz 'N Dogz and J.Phlip

Tuesday, September 24
Carl Cox: The Revolution - 'The Party Unites' closing party with Carl Cox and friends

Wednesday, September 25
Jamie Jones presents Paradise: The Next Dimension closing party with Jamie Jones and friends

Thursday, September 26
Loco Dice Presents Used + Abused @ Ushuaïa closing party

Thursday September 26
ENTER. Closing Party

Top tunes

1. Ninetoes – 'Finder' (Kling Klong)
Arguably this summer's 'Coma Cat'. Already a disco hit for the house cognoscenti
2. Green Velvet – 'Bigger Than Prince' (Hot Since 82 remix)
Heard this at Sankey's during Radio One weekend. Game over
3. Paul Woolford – 'Untitled' (Hotflush)
From Tong to Sasha, from Pacha to Ushuaïa, this is the piano anthem of the summer – but who has signed it?
