Wed 15 July, 2015 UJ Ibiza: JULY 2015 And we’re off! We’ve already been to Ibiza five times this season, and it’s only July… ALL SYSTEMS GO! So far this year we’ve launched a magazine, made ourselves comfortable in our new home at ME Ibiza, checked out some new nights and revisited some classics. And the overriding theme? This year, it’s all about techno. TECHNO All about techno There’s always been techno in Ibiza: tech house, romantic tech, and straight techno, with tech chic wares floating around. But this year in Ibiza, it is literally all about techno. Amnesia has three tech nights (Cocoon, HYTE, Music On), ENTER. just gets better and better (make sure you get there for the sake bar/Terrace party, early doors), and DC10 continues to have tech infused across the board. There’s a bit of a tech chic copycat branding war going on, too (we’ll let you decide who's copying who…). And what to wear? Everywhere, it’s a sea of black. Expensive, sunshine-savvy thin, gauze black, with sunrise-ready noir shades. We repeat, a Rick Owens pop up is needed in the port. HARISSA VILLAS Get a room! When we asked for two rooms at Giri Residence, they sent us this instead as an option – with a great great last minute deal, too (€700 per night for a five bed, wahey!). Their properties are largely around Es Vedra (tick), they’re all stylish, and if they’re available, chances are you’ll get a much better deal than booking a couple of hotel rooms for you and your friends. harissavillasibiza.com INSIDER TECH TALK Mar-T, Creative Director of Amnesia, on his musical history at the club, its sound today, and how the island is changing “In 1999 I started my own party, Delicatessen, at Amnesia. We did six parties over the summer and they went really well. One week, I invited a DJ called Sven Väth to come and play. We did four parties with Sven and they were awesome. I spoke to him about the idea of doing at it again the following year and he was like, "No! I want my own party!" Richie (now Dr. Richie Hawtin, recently honoured for his contribution to music tech by the University of Huddersfield!) is back with 12 weeks of Sake nights – one of the best nights on the island, with 10 weeks still left to go. The Terrace at Space has been transformed into little Tokyo, with Japanese lanterns, sake cocktails (which we’re convinced are hangover free), and Ibiza breeze flowing in. It’s almost a flashback to the old days, but with better style. The early hours, from 10PM-midnight, are truly special. And this year sees the ENTER.Sake fam welcome Shuhari.Gold from one of Japan’s oldest sake breweries, Matsumoto. GET SOME IN. DJ HOWARD AT ME IBIZA Beats by the pool There are lots of reasons to head for the secluded cove where ME Ibiza lives, but DJ Howard is up there as one of the top. Mixing Balaeric beats with hard-to-find remixes (no tech!), he sits jollily behind the decks playing the day away. And last summer, Sunday was all about Solomun at Pacha. This summer, we’ve got Luciano at Space, and Solomun at Pacha on Sunday. Major dilemma! The jury’s still out on where we’ll be (ish), but one thing’s for sure: there will always be Rumours first. UJ IBIZA MAGAZINE Have you seen our magazine? You know we launched a magazine this summer. Good one Ibiza, you got it right this time. Now, don’t stop there. This airport needs a lot of work! (Burger King and GAP, oh my!). STEVE BALL IBIZA INSIDER Steve Ball, owner of the Colombo Group, has been keeping busy. Yet with two new Brixton venues slated to open later this year – the nightclub, Phonox, which has a 24-hour license, and his third Blues Kitchen location – Ball still makes time for Ibiza. A regular to the White Isle since 1994, he goes simply for the “people, energy, and weather”.
