Deli-cious

Life's all about juxtaposition, right? Here at UJ we believe that the finest delis lurk in the most unlikely places..

Take grubby West Kentish Town: OK, so it's not the warzone it was in the 90s, but it's still the last place you'd expect to find the lovely Wild Organic Healthfood Café, with its array of fresh breads, bespoke salads (from £3) and a leafy park-facing alfresco eating area.

And if you're based in Soho, bypass the herds of bovine office workers grazing on sinisterly identical sarnies. Instead, stroll up sleepy Great Titchfield Street to the buzzy Scandinavian Kitchen, where you can create your own healthy smorgasbord - an open sandwich to you or me - from £4.50, or chow down on superior Danish hotdogs, or pickled herrings. Oh, and the coffee's great too.

Wild horses probably wouldn't drag you to that unlovely middle stretch of Essex Road, but then - silly you! - you'd miss the Tuscan-owned Food Lab. Impressive plates of Italian salads, risotto or pasta are only £3.50, and ramshackle outdoor seating completes an eclectic look. If only the view wasn't, um, the other side of the road.

Oh well. Like we said, it's all about juxtaposition, isn't it?
