  • V&A /// Sixties Fashion
The swinging sixties encapsulates an aesthetic and a spirit of youth that no other fashion style has rivalled, unless chav chic could be considered a modern equivalent, and how worrying is that? With garments ranging from the legendary collections of traditional tailor to the stars, Hardy Amies, the eclecticism of Ossie Clark to Biba’s iconic silhoutte, these designers forged the way for todays McQueens. It was Mary Quant’s perverse juxtapostion of styles that pushed the button, who would have thought that pudding basin haircuts with ankle socks could be a look? Forty years on, Quant is regarded as our female fashion pioneer, creating classless looks and virtually inventing the concept of high street style, so Topshop, and Philip Green should know who to thank.
