The Culturist

London’s cultural highlights this April

From a Hirst retrospective and the first ever London Sundance, to a warehouse party, Lucky Chip in Soho and MEATmarket in Covent Garden, we’ve got all areas covered this month. There’s even a new pop-up hotel in Mykonos to escape to, or some Easter fun in the form of bunny caps. So eat (meat), drink (Ouzo), and be merry (with cool hats). We can smell summer fun already.

ART:
Damien Hirst Retrospective
. . .
The tiger shark in formaldehyde, the spot paintings, the £8m diamond encrusted skull and the many, many pills: all have come to be iconic symbols of the school of Britart that Hirst championed with the YBAs back in the 90s. See it all in one room (or several) from tomorrow at Tate Modern.

April 4 - Sept 9, £14
Tate Modern, Bankside, SE1 9TG

FOOD:
Lucky Chip and MEATmarket
. . .
The meatwave continues. After a more than successful residency at the Sebright Arms, Lucky Chip comes to Soho’s Player Bar where they’ll be serving up sliders of their best burgers (mini Bill Murrays!). In other meat news, Yannis Papoutsis (of MEATliquor, the Meatwagon and #meateasy) launches MEATmarket in Covent Garden. They’ll have the usual burgers and hotdogs on the menu, hopefully without the queue.

INTERNATIONAL:
San Giorgio Mykonos
. . .
If you missed out on Tulum’s pop-up Papaya Playa (it closes on May 5) or A Room for London, then fear not, there’s another opportunity to tap into pop-up hotel fever, this time in the Mediterranean. Design Hotel’s latest, San Giorgio, is Greek-chic at its finest: white buildings, 60s boho rooms, authentic cuisine, an Aegean Sea-facing pool and monthly impromptu open-air house DJ sets. And it’s situated between Paradise and Paranga beaches.
. . .
Reservations now open for May 11 until end of October, rooms from €120 - €725
P.O. Box 153, Mykonos 84600, Greece

SHOP:
Bernstock Speirs at Dover Street Market
. . .
Fashion forward milliners Bernstock Speirs have set up a bunny cap shop in Dover Street Market’s basement exhibition space. That’s right, bunny caps: ears, bows and rainbow colours. Think Playboy meets Super Mario. They say: the display is inspired by the multiple product images of 60s pop art. We say: get one for Easter weekend parties.
. . .
Until April 18
17-18 Dover Street, W1S 4LT

MUSIC:
Deviation X Hyperdub Warehouse Session
. . .
For the next Deviation warehouse party, they’ve teamed up with London record label Hyperdub for what’s sure to be an all-night smasher (the first batch of early bird tickets have already sold out). Expect the usual underground fun but in a bigger space, with Detroit techno from Omar-S, jungle from Kode9, UK basshead Benji B, dub princess Cooly G and more.
. . .
April 27, £17.50
Warehouse location tbc

FILM:
Sundance
. . .
Utah comes to London this year for the first ever Sundance London. If you want to be ahead of the box office game, this festival is a must - remember Little Miss Sunshine? The most popular 14 films from the Sundance shortlist will be shown at a four-day festival at the O2, as well as a line-up of fresh bands and talks. Look out for witty romp 2 Days in New York with Chris Rock, and shorts Dol (First Birthday) and The Arm.
. . .
April 26-29, £11.50
The O2, Peninsula Square, SE10 0DX
