The Big British Bang

Selfridges have come over all patriotic this summer with a series of exclusive products, events and initiatives spanning the Jubilee-Olympics period. A concept store and tiara shop open on Friday, but look out for rooftop tea parties, Bompas and Parr’s crazy golf and band stand entertainment. Oh, and don’t forget to pick up your urban survival backpack (including a map, umbrella and Kendal Mint cake) to carry your Olympic essentials.

FRIDAY

EAT:
MEATmarket
  MARKET:
Street Feast

The next installment from Yannis Papoutsis (MEATliquor, the Meatwagon) in what’s sure to become a Meat Empire. Situated in the eaves of Jubilee Market, MEATmarket feels almost European (overlooking the bustling stalls down below) but it’s wholly American in its execution. More of a fast food joint than its Marylebone sister (long benches, retro lightboxes, trucker hats aplenty), there are some new additions to the menu: the Black Palace burger, hotdogs and Jägermeister floats. Their milkshake brings all the boys to the market.   Every Friday from now until July, London’s best street food vendors will set up shop in a car park off Brick Lane for Street Feast, an open-air night market. All the faves will be there, including The Ribman, Big Apple Hot Dog, Homeslice, Kimchi Cult, Yum Bun and more, as well as a long bar for tipples. There’s also a Car Wash private ‘dining room’ (with real cutlery and waiter service, oh yes) but be sure to book in advance.

AGENDA PICK

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey

Docu-film Being Elmo looks at Kevin Clash, the man behind the world’s favourite furry red puppet. After sweeping the boards at film festivals and winning a special award at Sundance, it’s crossed the pond and is on show at various Picturehouses Londonwide. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the film looks at rare archive and up-to-date footage of Clash, who started building puppets and performing on Baltimore’s Harbour front as a teen in the 70s, before he found a home on Sesame Street.

My Feelings Like You
  PARTY:
Cadenza Vagabundos London

Contemporary illustrator-artist Gary Taxali is so revered in North America that he’s even designed Canadian quarters for the Royal Canadian Mint. His first UK solo exhibition opens this weekend at The Outsiders - see colourful pop culture references and reimagined 30s iconography in nostalgic and funny pieces. And cartoons, lots of cartoons.   Production king Luciano brings his Vagabundos crew from the white isle over to London for the first ever UK show. He’ll be doing a three-hour set, followed by Reboot (a live set), Berlin’s Maayan Nidam and Alex Picone. ART:
Mau Mau presents
Pigs Might Fly
  BINGO:
Gay Bingo -
European Connection

Protesting grannies, flying pigs and shipwrecking mermaids are just a few sights to be seen at British street artist Mau Mau’s latest exhibition. After two sell-out shows in Tokyo he’s back home, showcasing 30 new works (on canvas, wood and skate decks). It’s only on until May 14 so get down there sharpish. More characters, more issues, and much more satire.   There’s nothing like a bit of Eurotrash on a bank holiday. Add lashings of bingo, as well as tranny stars Jonny Woo, Ma Butcher and John Sizzle, and you’ve got a bank holiday party meets game show on your hands. There’ll be bingo (obviously), cabaret performances and plenty of dancing (all Euro-inspired). Go on…
