Weekend Guide

The sun is shining (finally) so it’s time for some al fresco action this weekend. Explore a secret garden, hang out at a disused petrol station and book ahead for rooftop fun courtesy of Pitt Cue and Rock Lobsta. If you like it hot(ter), join us in Ibiza for IMS (the UJ team will be working – and partying – from the white isle this week) or head to Monaco for food, fast cars and glamour. Either way, it’s party time!

This Weekend’s Picks

JUBILEE

God Save the Clam

The Jubilee wouldn’t be quite right without a bit of rebellion. Behold, God Save the Clam: a punk rock take on a Clam Bake taking over a rooftop in London Fields over the Queen’s Jubilee weekend. Barbecue legends Pitt Cue and seafood faring Rock Lobsta are joining forces to cook up a feast alongside the Banshee cocktail bar serving Meantime beer and Cuervo Tradicional cocktails. Oh and there’s a sundae bar, of course. UJ have a special session on the Sunday. See you there!

FRIDAY

AL FRESCO:
Harvey Nichols’ Secret Garden
  EAT:
Shrimpy’s

If you haven’t found it already, then Harvey Nichols’ Secret Garden on the fifth floor terrace is a perfect oasis for after-shop cocktails and bites (it’s only on for another week). There’s a confession box designed by Marios Schwab, a perspex sculpture by Peter Pilotto and a Bamboo Palace (complete with golden pineapples) by James Long, not to mention other floral features designed by Mary Katrantzou, Roksana Ilincic, Lulu & Co and Marteen Van der Horst.   Petrol stations and gourmet food don’t usually go hand in hand (soggy sausage roll anyone?) but then the folk at Bistroteque came along and made garages chic. Overlooking the Regent’s Canal in King’s Cross, Shrimpy’s offers up a collection of dishes harvested from trips to the Americas: chicharrón, tuna tostada, salt cod. And with a forecourt bar opening in June, we’ll soon be partying à la Fast and the Furious.

ART:
Hayden Kays
Household Name
  EAT:
Hix Tramshed

For your fill of ironic and conspicuous art, head to The Cob Gallery to see Hayden Kays’ first solo show. Described as part of the next generation of pop artists, Kays subverts everyday references and images from mass culture to create bold and shocking pieces. Stop and contemplate prints posing challenging questions such as: does the Queen own jeans?   It’s all about steak and chicken at the new Hix outpost. And that’s pretty much it. The menu consists of three sharing starters, half or whole chicken, steak and three desserts. Simple. Hire the mezzanine for private dining above the hoi polloi, sit at the bar for cocktails and all-day bar snacks, or pick up a takeaway. Late night dirty chicken just got an upgrade.
