Weekend Guide

---

It's been a hectic few weeks: Olympics, Paralympics, post-Olympic mourning, LFW… so we're taking it easy this weekend with some chilled out fun times. Eat, shop and play, then head to a travelling members' club for a little recuperation (in the form of cocktails). And if you fancy jetting off to sunnier climes, the Delano opens in Marrakech tomorrow (souks and sun, yes please). Still in the party mood? Head to a car park in Shoreditch. Rave on.

ART:
Last Meals on Death Row
  BEAUTY:
Zaha Hadid x Fudge Pop Up

One of the original YBAs, Mat Collishaw has left no taboo unbroken: pornography, the crucifixion, fairies, syphilitic child prostitutes, bestiality and bondage – it's quite a list. Head to Other Criteria for his latest exhibition depicting the last meals chosen by American death row prisoners, arranged in the style of 17th century Vanitas paintings. Plus, glass sculptures in the form of plastic bongs, naturally.   Fudge have been sprucing up the fashion set all week, mixing beauty with art in Zaha Hadid's London gallery. The pop up hair salon, decked out in striking black and white, offers the usual cut, colour and blow dry options, with a side of architectural elegance. Today is the last day so make an appointment sharpish (email zarah@exposure.net to book), or simply walk in to view Hadid's latest designs.

PARTY:
Hewett Street Block Party
  PARTY:
Onemore at Hearn Street Car Park

Protein have gathered East London's finest for a bonafide fun time extravaganza this weekend: a design, food, music, art mash up, if you will. Tuck into dishes from the likes of Elliot's and Rita's, peruse the new in-house mag store and settle down for a complimentary shave from Murdock. You can even photograph the results in the Chromo photo booth. All profits will go to Hackney Pirates so you can join the revelry with a warm fuzzy glow.   Summer may be coming to an end, but OneMore are back for another night of world class tunes, banging beats and alfresco dancing. With house fave Mathias Kaden heading the bill and a cameo from Berlin-based, Italian-born DJ Cesare vs Disorder, expect a night full of techno techno techno techno. And it's in a car park – very House of Holland.

COLLABORATION

Esprit x Royal Academy

Collaboration is in – think Topshop, Selfridges… Minnie Mouse. Next to join the fray: Esprit. Hooking up with the Royal College of Art, they've selected three of its postgraduate fashion design students to produce innovative capsule collections. From Ryan Mercer's abstract prints inspired by paint residues in an artist's studio, to Rachael Hall's Merino creations and Julia Mackenroth's re-worked aran patterns, this is one collection you'll want to snap up now.

Esprit RCA Limited Edition collection is available in selected Esprit stores and online

EAT:
Bentley's Sea Grill at Harrods
  SHOP:
Salad Days Pop Up Shop

If you haven't found a reason to go to Harrods in a while (guilty), we've got the perfect excuse. UJ fave Richard Corrigan has set up his famous seafood grill in the food halls of the Knightsbridge stalwart. Perch on a stool, order grilled prawns, lobster, oysters and chips, and settle into an afternoon of people watching. UJ loves the Royal fish pie and we're rather taken with the dedicated seafood cocktail section: retro classics.   For an eclectic mix of arty bits from the best of Britain's design and art students, head to the Salad Days pop up shop for their last weekend of action. There's everything from homewares (cool frames, 3D fish clocks, colourful cushions), to day-of-the-week clothes hangers and plastic stacking rings – we want the melon.

CHRYSAn

1 Snowden Street, EC2A 2DQ | 020 3657 4777 | @ChrysanUK

Location

Smack bang in the centre of the City, next to contemporary Italian joint L’Anima, Chrysan is surrounded by offices – so you can be sure the big boys will be breezing in for a power lunch. The first of two restaurants to open in the area by the Hakkasan Group, expect an Asian takeover in the next few months.

Vibe

Perhaps it picks up in the evening, but when we went for lunch the restaurant was eerily quiet (except for the hotel lobby music). This is fine dining rather than Tokyo backstreets, so expect hushed reverence from the staff and ceremonious placing of plates. The separate bar looks perfect for cocktails and light bites, so for a more casual night out, head here first.

Flavours

Traditional Japanese ingredients combined with French techniques and local produce means this isn’t your usual sushi spot. Chef Yoshihiro Murata, an internationally acclaimed master of kaiseki (similar to Western haute cuisine), turns out beautiful dishes with unusual flavour combinations – think Scottish lobster with dashi broth, magnolia leaf with pork belly and salmon with mint miso sauce. Bento boxes are a quick fix for lunch but go all out with the tasting menu for dinner. Desserts are where it gets really experimental: cucumber soup, soy caramel tarte tatin and cauliflower crème are not for the faint hearted.

Décor

Designed by Yoshiaki Nakamura, a master craftsman, carpenter and designer from Kyoto, the interior features his signature clean lines and pale wooden structures. For a room with a view, book the chef's table, which features an open window into the kitchen. And make sure to check out the high-tech loos – heated seats are just the beginning.

Upshot

Chef Murata holds an impressive seven Michelin stars in Japan. No time for a Far East jaunt? Chrysan is kaiseki haute cuisine without the air miles.
