If you hadn't already jam-packed your weekend full of bits from our August Culturist – learning Chinese, swimming in Brockwell, drinking wine in Hackney – then we've got a few more suggestions – and they mostly revolve around food. We have bratwurst, pizza and the new Street Feast on the menu, as well as a party favourite on Friday, and a new Studio Ghibli release on Sunday. Internationally, we're looking to Venice and Paris this month. And, if you're lamenting the near-end of festival season, start next year's planning with our Worldwide review.

INTERNATIONAL #1

Venice Film Festival

If you missed the opening of the Venice Biennale in June, head there at the end of the month for a double culture whammy of art and cinema. The 70th Venice Film Festival, which starts on August 28, is the oldest film festival in the world, so expect big contenders: James Franco's adaptation of Cormac McCarthy novel Child Of God, Paul Schrader's highly anticipated The Canyons (Brett Easton Ellis wrote it, LiLo and porn actor James Deen star) and opening film Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón's new sci-fi thriller with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Miu Miu will also return to the festival this year with the 5th and 6th installments of its Women's Tales short films.

Maison Kitsuné Pop-Up at The Palais Royal Garden

Our boos at the news of Kitsuné's store closures (due to renovations) quickly turned to woos when news broke of its replacement pop-up at the Palais Royal Garden. Hidden in a floral-covered corner of the gardens of the Domaine National du Palais Royal, opposite the Palais du Louvre, the summer pop-up will have all the expected rails of its ready-to-wear line, records and arty bric-à-brac. Kitsuné via the Louvre - we like.

FRIDAY

EAT:
Pizza Pilgrims
  PARTY:
Deviation at XOYO

Our favourite three-wheeling pizza boys, Pizza Pilgrims, have gone bricks and mortar (but don't worry, the Piaggio Ape will still be around). Opening their first pizzeria on Dean Street, Thom and James will be serving up their old favourites: classic Neapolitan margheritas, Portobello mushroom with smoked garlic oil and spicy Nduja sausage, plus some new Napoli additions. There's also prosecco on tap (of course) and limencello is the main cocktail star.   It's the first Friday of the month, which means one thing – Deviation at XOYO. The monthly knees-up will feature main man Benji B plus a heavyweight line up that includes Tri-Angle's Evian Christ and New York-based artist, musician and composer, Fatima Al Qadiri. And that's just downstairs. Upstairs, funk, grime and electronica will be order of the day, courtesy of wunderkinds Lil Silva, Scratcha and Sampha. Fingers crossed for the Jessie Ware Valentine mash up.

FEAST:
Street Feast
  SHOP:
Mr Quiffy

Those of you who are mourning the end of Street Feast, Merchant Yard will be happy to hear of its new 8-week run at Dalston Yard. Head there at brunch time this Saturday for a Bloody Mary Buffet (or Caffeine Canteen for the soft-core among you) and the East London Brunch Club. Alternatively, arrive later for this week's line up of vendors including Cheeky Italian, Yum Jungle and Breddo's Taco Shack, among others, as well as new fixture Street Vin wine bar, home to a list of interesting producers at decent prices. We say go sharesies on their Magnum of the Week.   Henry Holland just got cooler, quite literally. Taking over an ice cream van and christening it "Mr Quiffy", the touring technicolour van has all the bells and whistles of an ice cream truck – without the actual ice cream. Instead, expect to be served limited edition House of Holland merchandise by Mr Holland himself (well, maybe), as the bus is set to tour London from Friday onwards, before hitting the road northwards for Manchester. First stop – Covent Garden.

FESTIVAL REVIEW

Worldwide 2013, Sète Franc

In A Sentence
They Say: Experience the best of today's inspired artists, bands and DJs in the most unique environments.

We Say: Gilles Peterson and friends having a laugh in the South of France.

The Party
The overriding sentiment we got at this festival is that it's civilised! Everything from the venues, to the crowd, to the loo queues, to the drinks served (our drink of choice was rosé) were much more civilised than anything we've seen at a festival before. The venues really make this festival.

SUNDAY

EAT:
Herman Ze German
  FILM:
From Up on Poppy Hill

Stop for lunch or dinner, Berliner-style, at Soho newbie Herman Ze German on Old Compton Street. After the success of its Villier Street Shop, ze bratwurst is making it big time in W1. Go for bratwurst, brockwurst, chilli beef or leberkäse sausages, or the customary currywurst (a sausage topped with curry-tomato sauce). All washed down with Fritz Cola cocktails. Lecker!   From hotdogs to cartoons. Japan's iconic anime house, Studio Ghibli, is back with new film From Up on Poppy Hill. Expect the usual Ghibli monikers: colourful animations, a catchy soundtrack and an intriguing storyline. Based on a 1980s manga, the tale is set in Yokohama prior to the 1964 Olympics and follows the romance of two teenagers who campaign to save their student clubhouse from demolition. It may not be as fantastical as its Ghibli predecessors but it's a charming watch, especially on a rainy Sunday.

Soho Diner – The new diner on the block

19-21 Old Compton Street, W1D 5JJ | 0207 7345656 | @SohoDinerLDN

In a sentence
Electric Diner's Soho sister.
Vibe
Like the Electric Diner but Soho-side without the gloss (they've traded in the bouncy red booths for what look like park benches here). It's sociable, casual, and has an almost-pub-like feel.
Flavours
Classic American dishes – on steroids. A few of the main Electric stars have made the move to Soho. The signature cheeseburger still ticks all the boxes (brioche buns, melted cheese, special sauce with a double patty and the option of bacon and/or fried egg), as did the chicken wings, in all their sticky splendour. But enough about the Electric-Soho exchange; we especially liked the Soho-only dishes. Standouts were the souped-up Philly cheese steak sandwich – think 100% beef, capsicum, shallots and onion without a drop of Philly cheese, replaced instead with Italian Provolone. They have all the fashionable food buzz words on the menu, too – quinoa, mac 'n' cheese, aioli fries – but our favourite were the never-before-seen ham and cheese toastie fingers. Dessert may be no frills at a first glance, but the banana split is trucker size and the brownie is no bland Betty Crocker. But the real P.O.D of the diner is the cocktails on tap. A gung-ho nod to the 2013 prosecco-on-tap trend; our favourites were the negroni (a real kicker) and the Ginger Collins with fresh and crystallised ginger. "We couldn't help but wonder" about the Cosmo... is this a comeback?
Décor
American via British diner (no surprises there). Think counter-top dining and American retro touches – old-school reel machines and chequered floor. And being a new addition to the Soho House family, there is the compulsory dark wood panelling and exposed kitchen.
Upshot
Cocktails on tap – enough said.
