All grown up

London's new dawn

Exposed brick, warehouse parties and hole-in-the walls – we've had some good times. But the 'trendulum' has swung and London is looking to bigger and better things. The city is growing up – and it's growing fast!

London's culinary habits have gone the way of star grazing. With nine out of the 15 Michelin single stars going to London, gastronomy and astronomy have synched up. And we're not talking old-school establishments like The Fat Duck or Le Gavroche. Instead, it's all about the new kids on the block: Restaurant Story, Lima, Brasserie Chavot, HKK, Bo London, and Social Eating House. Having all been given a star within quick succession of opening, our standards have now been set. Goodbye gastro-pubs and hokey pop ups, dinner is now a star studded affair.

It's not just the menus that have been given a polish. The latest in a series of big openings have paved the way for longer nights, opulent surrounds and chicer designs. From the OTT Ruski's Tavern to the chandelier lit Berners Tavern, overly luxe fit out at No.41 and the muted sophistication at Hoi Polloi, our restaurant scene has been given a fresh lick of paint.

Last up, let's talk fashion. In one fell swoop (three months) three of London's independent designers: Christopher Kane, Nicholas Kirkwood and J.W.Anderson have graduated to the big leagues thanks to the recent snap ups at Kering and LVMH. Watch out McCartney and McQueen, the young ones have officially grown up.
