It’s Getting Personal

DJs DISH UP

Musicians and restaurants – it's been done. From Britney to Jay Z, we've had our fill of the muso/big brand symbiosis. Now it's all about grassroots ventures: DJs are doing more than just lending their names to brands. From cafés to cook-offs, things are getting personal.

First up, the venues. We're no strangers to DJ Kaz James' the Shoreditch Grind, founded to bring antipodean coffee to London (you can take the boy out of Melbourne…), but this is no arms-length endorsement. From the billboard sign, espresso martinis and recording studio upstairs (eyes peeled for a constant flow of musical talent), to the 1am closing time, this is definitely a café with a DJ's soul. Just a skip away, Seth Troxler is part owner in the soon-to-reopen Smokey Tails, a barbecue joint born from his passion of smoked meats. BBQ ribs and pulled pork burgers are the main stars, but it's the DJs (including Seth himself) on decks that give it the Troxler touch.

Now let's talk drinks. Richie Hawtin may be famous as a techno master, but his sake passion is ever growing. Having spent two years in Japan learning the ins and outs, trained as a sake sommelier, and with projects ENTER.Sake, ENTER.Sookuu, and ENTER.Sacca under his belt, who knows what's next in his sake pipeline? And over at Café Mambo, the Mambros (who live and love their hierbas) have made their own, meant not just as a post-dinner drink, but as a main libation for the all-night Mambo parties.

Lastly, events. The Traktor Cookery School sees bigwig foodie DJs donning the aprons. While that may sound old hat, the school is making its US debut at the Red Bull Guest House during Miami Music Week. So mark March 27 in your diary, because it's not just a cook-off, but the start of a
four-day pop up. Nick Sabine (of Resident Advisor) and his wife Lyndell (a trained chef who runs LDN supper club Crumble) alongside a roster of DJs will be taking to the grills for the feast, so blag a seat at the chef's table: headline acts have hit the Miami menu.
