MIX

Frankie Knuckles RIP

There are few DJs who have played as significant a role on UJ's road to ravedom as Frankie Knuckles. A defining moment for us was partying at La Terrrazza in Barcelona back in the day. It was here that we were introduced to the Frankie vibe. Every party was his house party. The music! The atmosphere! The dancing! So it is with great sadness that we learned of his passing earlier this week. In memory, we hope you all turn this Frankie mix UP, courtesy of DJ Jeffrey. And this Boiler Room set is another goodie. RIP Frankie, we will dearly, dearly miss you.

If you missed 1984 at the Almeida, here's your chance to catch it on the West End. Nominated for a 2014 Olivier Award for Best New Play, and after two sold-out runs, Orwell's dystopian masterpiece has transferred to the Playhouse Theatre for a strictly limited season from April 28. You know the drill: it's 1984, Big Brother is watching, and Winston Smith falls into an illicit love affair. This critically acclaimed production features radical new staging that explores surveillance, identity and why Orwell's vision of the future is as relevant now as ever. Book now!

1984, from April 28 at Playhouse Theatre, Northumberland Avenue, WC2N 5DE, 101 tickets for every performance will be priced at £19.84, book here

FRIDAY

EAT:
HILL & SZROK
  PARTY:
BESTIVAL'S DESERT ISLAND DISCO DANCEHALL AT THE BUSSEY BUILDING

Meat, meat and more meat. Hill & Szrok, a 2-in-1 butchers and cookshop (aka restaurant) has opened on Broadway Market. By day expect all the trimmings of an artisanal butcher: locally sourced rare breeds, free range and organic meats. By night the central marble worktop is transformed into a communal dining table ready for a feast of meats. Expect a menu of mutton, sausages, steak, and lamb…well, you get the picture. But if a meat-heavy dinner isn't on the cards, there's always their Sunday roast.   Now for a trip to Bestival - via the Overground. The stalwart Bussey Building is gearing up for the festival season with a pre 'desert island disco' at the Peckham institution. Think live disco vibes delivered via The Wytches, Wild Smiles and The Wolf plus DJ sets by Run Tingz Cru, Tayo and Mr Bestival himself Rob da Bank. Now all we need is some sunshine, swim-up style cocktails, and sand beneath our toes…

SATURDAY

EAT:
WHEN MAC MET CHEESE
  PARTY:
MODE

Lobster, jalapeno, truffle…suffice to say, we've had our fair share of mac 'n' cheese. And we're still going. Festival favourite when Mac Met Cheese has gone bricks and mortar in Bayswater, meaning the one dish is available all ways. Menu options include Cheese Green Afros (vintage stilton, mozzarella and broccoli) or Carlos the Cactus (sun blushed plum tomatoes and parmesan), plus some Macancinis (truffle and wild mushroom or jalapenos and cheddar). Finish the meal with some deep-fried Oreos…and now, breathe.   Adios Supper Club, welcome Mode. The newest late night addition to Notting Hill is set to give W11 some of its late-night mojo back. Expect a restaurant, cocktail bar, big bill DJs and a 3am closing time. Then, to give it some extra zhush, expect a rotating 'immersive theme' every six months – starting with Future Vintage. Think the industrial revolution by way of art, performances, music and LED lights.

Theatre Picks

UJ SHORTLIST

There's a lot of good theatre out there right now. To help you decide what to see, we hit up our theatre guru Chris McGill, from milktwosugars for his stage picks of the season. Here are his top five:

Let The Right One In

A killer hit book, a killer hit film and now a hit play. It's re-opening the Apollo Theatre after a freak accident and it's truly brilliant. The National Theatre of Scotland has made an amazing play that justifies the transition from book to film to theatre–perfect for people who don't go to the theatre (those who do go need to add it to their list of things to say they've seen).

Let The Right One In, Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, W1D 7ES, book online or by phone

SUNDAY

EAT:
COFFEE DOGS
  SEE:
Pangaea at Saatchi Gallery

Stop for a bite at King's Cross newbie Coffee Dogs. The easy-to-navigate menu of three burgers, five dogs and doughnuts (direct from Dum Dum's Donutterie in Shoreditch - the best in the land, so we hear) is all about simple but gourmet bites. And for those still lining up at Shake Shack, good news! They're also packing frozen custard (the 'crack' of American deserts – again, so we hear). But if the burgers, dawgs, and frozen custard can't pull you to N1, we hear they have Cronuts.   Spending your Sunday with giant ants may not seem ideal, but when they attack via the Saatchi Gallery, well, it's art. The museum's latest exhibition, unveiling new and young talent hailing from Africa and Latin America, involves sculptures (the ants made from two casts of human skulls by Rafael Gómezbarros are a stand out), vibrant and pop-art inspired paintings and photography. And when you're done, newly opened Tommi's Burger Joint is just around the corner…

Coffee Roundup

Here at UJ we love a good cup of Joe, and with London Coffee Festival upon us, we thought we'd share our top picks that have us buzzing. First up, we have the bricks and mortar openings, starting with pop up Clipper Coffee Merchants. The first 'bulk brew bar' in Shoreditch promises a continually changing single origin menu, with 25p of every coffee sold going to its origin coffee farms. Nice. Next, Workshop Coffee Co is spreading its wings for the Holborn Coffeebar. Get ready for the 1,200 square foot wooden and marble clad café offering everything from Aeropress to filter and batch brewed. Finally, on the DIY front is Cru Kafe –100% Arabica organic coffee in a Nespresso compatible pod. We'll drink to that! Stay tuned for a big Soho coffee announcement soon, too…

Q GRILL

29-33 Chalk Farm Rd, NW1 8AJ | Website

In a Sentence
Memphis comes to Chalk Farm Road.
Location
In the heart of Camden, opposite the Stables Market, Q Grill is a welcome addition to the restaurant wasteland of NW1.
Vibe
Laidback, sociable and busy: all of the tables in the 150-cover space were occupied by a mix of gig-goers, locals and Des McDonald devotees.
Flavours
Decidedly Southern. Cornish hens wings, barbequed in a smoky glaze and delivered to the table in a takeout foil bag, packed a punch. The Josper ribs, cooked at a fiery 300 degrees Celsius (massive, deliciously charred, and uber tender) are a must. Sides are similarly indulgent: a side of scrumpy onion rings were perfectly crisp and moreish. The dessert menu focused on classics with a twist. The main star was a devilishly boozy bourbon and pecan tart, although the banoffee cheesecake looked a close second. Now for the drinks: try a fresh and zingy gin cobbler (lemonade, ginger ale, Sipsmith Summer Cup, agave syrup), or a classic, all-American root beer. Or both.
Décor
Southern, with a hint of hipster: rough timber, industrial lighting, Dixie-style booths and neon signage.
Upshot
Q grill does takeaway, too…fried chicken to go, anyone?
