California Love

LAX > LDN

Yes, we've still got LA on the mind but it seems we're not the only ones; as of late London is awash with a fresh and healthy West Coast vibe. Juice bars are filling the streets, the young and trendy are leading a health revolution, fad exercise routines are, well, routine, and hanging in hotels is de rigueur. Welcome to la la land.

We've always had juice bars – nothing new there – but in 2014 it's gone beyond juice in a cup. Think cold-press vs. blended, macerated vs. centrifugal, niche vs. high street… and it doesn't stop there. Where you juice is as important as the juice itself. Are you from hipster camp Lovage, design savvy Canyon Juicery, Goop-ish Roots and Bulbs or faaaashion Plenish?

It's not just our drinking that has taken a healthy turn. The new generation of PYTs are putting healthy back on the menu. The Good Life Eatery has all the traits of a new 'it' spot, but it's all about health conscious, locally sourced dishes. Health food blogger Deliciously Ella caused a stir when her app went straight to number one on iTunes (confession: we've tried to DIY her cauliflower pizza base); top health blog Honestly Healthy released a cookbook (Honestly Healthy For Life) in March to a star-studded affair; we expect the same buzz when style savvy Hemsley + Hemsley release their cookbook (The Art of Eating Well) this summer.

Exercise has gone from 2013 'party-fitness' (morning raves, colour runs, neon tunnel workouts…) to fad LA-fitness regimes, and we're taking it seriously. London's answer to SoulCycle (a 'spiritual' sweat spin class), Psycle follows the same principles: high intensity spinning with bouts of meditative moments and inspirational coaching. And the ethos of Santa Monica's Full-Blast Yoga can be seen via London hybrid, Voga: a dance class with the synchronised movement of yoga.

Lastly, our late-night haunts have also taken an LA turn. From the explosion of 'one-stop venues' (a LA car-to-venue thing) Oslo, Number 90 and Fairground, to our newly adopted hotel culture – Chiltern Firehouse (hi Chateau Marmont) and the soon-to-open Mondrian Southbank, it seems LA life is getting foothold.
