The Wind Rises on Friday (and we’re not talking about the weather), followed by two airborne spots (a gritty Shoreditch rooftop versus the ritzy Shangri-La), a party favourite in Camden, a Michelin-starred dinner in Mayfair and a doughnut hatch on Kingsland Road. WATCH:
THE WIND RISES |
 |
EAT:
TING at the Shangri-La |
 |
Today we say goodbye to the granddaddy of Japan's iconic Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki via his final film The Wind Rises. Based on the fictionalised biography of Jiro Horikoshi, the real-life designer of the notorious Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter aircraft, the tale follows the protagonist’s career, with the usual Ghibli ingredients of romance, vivid imaginings and lost dreams. The cartoon may not have as many accolades as previous Ghibli films (yet) but having topped the Japanese film charts last year, we’re expecting good things. |
 |
Last Friday, we got a taste of sky-high digs via Jason Atherton, so tonight we’re back on the rise. Ting, London’s latest restaurant on level 32 of the newly opened Shangri-La Hotel in The Shard is as you would expect: glossy, swanky and sleek. Expect a modern European menu with some Asian twists: think hand-dived scallops with a light yuzu and grape seed oil dressing and Welsh lamb with mirin, sake and soy sauce. Our tip- book a table after May 19 (the opening date of their level 52 bar GŎNG) for an after dinner cocktail. Plus, we hear the bar includes an infinity pool – meaning – expect some serious wow factor. |

EAT:

PARTY:
Housekeeping at Koko |
 |
Continuing with the high-octane openings this weekend comes Fera at Claridges. From chef du jour Simon Rogan (the Michelin-starred man behind L’Enclume), Fera is all about seasonal ingredients. On the à la carte and tasting menus are dishes like dry-aged Herdwick hogget, clay baked asparagus, and beetroot cake. There’s a private room and a chef’s table to complement the main dining area, all with opulent Art Deco interiors…when in Claridges). |
 |
Now for a knees-up: Housekeeping is back at Koko for their Seven Deadly Sins series. This time around the name of the game is Gluttony, so expect Koko to be transformed into a hedonistic, overindulgent den for a 2000-strong crowd, courtesy of
Made Up Productions. Hit the dance floor to back-to-back sets of deep, funky tech house, with a side of original remixes and bootlegs from the Housekeeping boys. The last two nights in the series sold out, so grab tickets quick! And have a listen of what's to come
here. |

SHOP:
The Duke STREET EMPORIUM |
 |
DRINK:
Emporio Eivissa |
 |
Duke Street is hotting up. Alongside The Beaumont’s imminent opening comes the launch of Jigsaw’s concept store, Duke Street Emporium. The retail space combines the high-end labels of The Shop at Bluebird with pieces from Jigsaw’s main line, a Fernandez & Wells coffee and pastry shop, a bookshop, and art installations. One stop shop, indeed. |
 |
Another summer, another rooftop. The latest pop up to rise up in Shoreditch comes via Emporio Eivissa, an Ibiza meets East London style experience, so they say. Expect a cocktail bar by rum brand Brugal (mojitos all around!), street food by Platterform and market stalls. Plus being White Isle-inspired, you can also expect some DJs on decks and day beds. Although entrance is free, ’tickets’ must be purchased here. |

LARDO'S SPRING MENU |
 |
 |
 |
205 Richmond Rd, E8 3NJ | Website |
 |
In a Sentence |
La dolce vita in London Fields |
Location |
On Richmond Road, Lardo is part of the landscape, surrounded by a host of good (Franco Manca) and not so good (erm…Dominos) Italian joints. |
Vibe |
Lardo has all the fixings of a neighbourhood gem: communal tables, a buzzing Hackney crowd, and charming service. |
Flavours |
Fresh, hearty and adventurous. The ever-changing menu at Lardo is dictated by the seasonal, locally sourced produce that is delivered to the kitchen daily, so don’t bet on getting the same dish twice. They’re serious about charcuterie for good reason: the fennel pollen salami was fragrant, unusual and instantly addictive. Next, we tried focaccia seasoned with rosemary and topped with the restaurant’s eponymous, melt in your mouth lardo - let’s just say we understand why they named the entire restaurant after it. As for the all important pizza? Fresh from the wood fired oven, the spicy ’nduje, pepper and provolone pizza was perfectly crisp and moreish. Then onto the pastas. Just like mama used to make, these are cooked from scratch - classicists should choose the indulgent nettle tagliatelle with a cream and mushroom sauce, while the daring have options like dandelion ravioli (things never get boring here). Finally, to drink, try the zingy StellaSpritz, an aperitif combining homemade pompelmocello and prosecco, or go for a bottle from the small but discerning Italian wine list. |
Décor |
The London Fields look: low lights, high ceilings and reclaimed wood. Bar stools surround an open kitchen, which hosts the piece de resistance, a disco ball wood fired oven (yes, really). |
Upshot |
Lardo’s partner in crime, Coppa, is re-opening its rooftop this month, complete with deckchairs, drinks, an Italian-style BBQ, and sunshine galore (well, we can’t promise that last bit, but fingers crossed). |
