FRIDAY

EAT:
Barrafina, Covent Garden
  Party:
Felix Da Housecat at XOYO

Soho's favourite tapas bar, Barrafina, has opened its second branch in Covent Garden (down the road from Polpo and El Nivel). As with the original, expect traditional and contemporary tapas, served from a long marble bar, plus some new Adelaide Street additions. From the frituras and chargrilled dishes (oyster ceviche and Iberican pork ribs), a private dining space downstairs, and its very own plancha, there are some differences, but just as with Frith Street there are no reservations so expect the same queues.   In March we saw Felix Da Housecat on the decks at Pacha London, and now we're ready for round two. This time he is hitting up XOYO with UJ fave Nic Fisher (of Gutterslut). Expect late-night disco and electro vibes, combined with some signature Gutterslut 'raving, slaving and misbehaving'!

The Kopparberg experience continues. Last week we partied in the Forest to Kelis, and this weekend we're starting with live gigs courtesy of Sean McGowan and Misty Miller. Saturday is all about an old-school hip-hop takeover by So Fresh So Clean: think R'n'B jams and a house party vibe. And Sunday? It's time to chill out to the live Scandi sounds of Sailor & I and Dagny. And those are just some of the highlights. For a full line up of DJs and live performances set to shake the forest this weekend click here.

SATURDAY

EAT:
T.E.D (Think Eat Drink)
  DRINK:
Bump Caves

Welcome new kid on the N1 block, T.E.D (Think Eat Drink), a restaurant that has sustainability as its USP. This means simple, ethically sourced British produce: think seasonal vegetables, homemade salads, cured meats, fish and a biodynamic, carbon-neutral wine list. Plus, its ethical angle doesn't stop at the menu. The two-floored restaurant has been decked out with sustainably sourced fixtures and fittings, salvaged furniture, reclaimed tiles, and up-cycled tables, all from the design team behind Jamie Oliver's Fifteen.   Head to Tower Bridge for the opening weekend of the underground 'dive-bar and distillery', Bump Caves. Inspired by the late-60s psychedelic movement, we're not exactly sure what to expect, except that there will be Kool-Aid tests, light shows, and 'ear-melting music'. Here, bartenders are chemists, distillers and rectifiers, and drinks come in the form of beer and bumps: artisan beer matched with 'bumps' such as Sauvignon Blanc and Lavender Honey Mezcal, or Cut Grass and Mahaleb Cherry Distillate. And if all sounds a bit OTT, well, could be fun?

SUNDAY

SEE:
Rams Gate Fashion Market
  Drink:
WC: Wine & Charcuterie

Our top pick from our July Culturist has opened this weekend. The Barbican's Rams Gate Fashion Market has transformed Ram Place in Hackney into a nine-day café, event and design space. Inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier, expect rails of local and emerging designers plus workshops, activities and performances. There is a talk by menswear designer James Long, a serious panel discussion on fashion, image and race, plus a not-so-serious recreation of Jean Paul Gaultier's haute couture dress made from living plants. Food wise, local cafe Railroad will be barbecuing while Rita's is in charge of the cocktails.   End your weekend in a Clapham Common toilet. The former public convenience has been gutted, renovated and, cleaned. The aptly named WC is now a trendy wine and charcuterie bar, serving small plates of charcuterie boards, breads and cheese all paired with a small but regularly updated wine list. Spend your evening downstairs in the intimate 40-seater bar, or, if the weather permits, nab a seat in the larger outdoor area. Next week, we think a visit to a no-frills pub is in order.

Reserved: The Palomar

A taste of New Jerusalem

Location
On Rupert Street just off Shaftsbury Avenue, meaning, its smack bang in the middle of theatreland.

Vibe
It's loud, bustling, and fun. The recipe of good food and good times, thanks to the three chef proprietors, from Jerusalem's 'It' restaurant, Machneyuda, and the two owners (siblings DJ Layo Paskin, of club The End and its offshoot bar AKA, and his sister Zoe). Tunes blast, the 'first-come, first-served' kitchen counter remains constantly packed, and the staff like to party.

Flavours
The menu is a fusion of non-kosher Jewish, Arabic and Mediterranean flavours: think 'New Jerusalem' –creative, multicultural and modern. Here, it's all about sharing. For those who don't regularly 'Ottolenghi', the menu may seem difficult - Bourekas here and a Hamusta there - but the waiters will guide you. The Daily 6, an assorted mezze is a good starting point (Josper Aubergine, Beetroot and Goats Cheese, and Puy lentils with tzatziki were standouts). Next, the Raw Bar, for fans of steak tartare, the Kubenia mixed with bulgar, tahini, herbs and pinenuts is a must, so too the salmon tartare (mixed with lemon, pomegranate and ginger). For bigger plates, hit up the 'Stove.Josper.Plancha' menu. We went for the Shakshukit, a deconstructed kebab, swimming in lemon, tapenade, pesto, harissa and tahini. For those who want a richer experience try the Polenta "Jerusalem style", a Machneyuda signature, and served in Kilner jars filled with asparagus, mushroom, parmesan and truffle oil. Finally, to drink: it's summer, so try the fresh Hibis Kiss – gin, lime, hibiscus sherbet topped with tonic water, or namesake cocktail – tequila, grapefruit, lime juice, with soda water.

Décor
The décor is as fresh as the menu – not a brick wall or industrial light to be seen – it's simple, chic and inviting. Washed pinks and turquoise hues dominate the restaurant, a nod to the art deco era but the zinc counter top, raw bar, and neon Palomar sign give it its modern touch – and it works.

Upshot
Finally, a restaurant that doubles as a destination in itself AND a pre-and post-theatre option.
