Down in the Underground

Something’s been happening underground lately. And we do mean literally. From art and fashion pop ups to cool cafes and a creative festival, it seems the London tube is no longer just a journey but a destination.

We first noticed it at Piccadilly. Circa December 2013, with the Nike x Roundel London capsule collection and its unlikely muse TFL. The Air Max’s – inspired by the District Line’s patterned seats – were sold at Piccadilly Circus’ pop-up kiosk. Next came a dose of culture with big-bill artists attached (Idris Khan, Sarah Lucas, Wolfgang Tillmans…) via the Art on the Underground’s Print Shop pop up. And now, Piccadilly Grind is serving their brand of cool coffee and artisanal roasts to underground commuters.

In May, St James’s Park station got in with a sporting chance thanks to Pop Up Ping Pong (PUPP) and their four day underground residence with all the trendy trimmings: coffee, cocktails and cold-press juices. Now, it’s onto the Northern line – Old Street station, to be precise. Jamie Oliver did a cocktail pop up in July, followed by Black Sheep Coffee who served coffees from coconuts while next door Press London sold juices from a bathtub. And the latest addition that has us excited? Batch, an organic pop up filled with healthy offerings and good creds: from ‘eco-warrior’ chef Arthur Potts Dawson in charge of the nutritious snacks to the Juiceman shots and cold pressed juices, the health-volution of Old Street has begun!

We're sticking to the Old Street tube for the upcoming week of creative happenings courtesy of Brite Space London. There are raw food master classes, live Hoxton Radio broadcasts, serious debates with east London entrepreneurs and less serious dog yoga and hula classes. Plus, there’s some cocktail action – first up a Battle of the Bloody Marys by Reyka, followed by the Underground Drinking Club, who will be moving in next week to serve up some innovative tipples by candlelight.

Suddenly the commute isn’t looking so bad.

Don’t miss this autumn’s all-star hit comedy from the multi-award-winning writer of Calendar Girls, Tim Firth.

Neville’s Island follows the misadventures of four out-of-condition, out-of-their-depth businessmen on an out-of-control team-building exercise. Shipwrecked in the Lake District, menaced by wildlife and with only a sausage between them, our unlikely explorers battle the elements and each other as corporate bonding descends into a hilarious carnival of squabbling, French cricket and cagoules.
