Have your fill

Sandwiches are officially in the limelight. Sure, there were whiffs of the sarnie trend in 2013 – pimped up combos at F.A.T by Freddie, and American subs at Red Dog – but the butties never really hit the big time (we blame the trendy toastie). Until now.

We previously had to trek to Mishkin’s for a decent Reuben on rye, but now we’re heading to the Lower Eastside Deli, Shoreditch side. Where they’ve got all the essentials ticked – Pastrami, salt beef, short ribs etc. Next, we’re psyched for Delancey & Co, the soon-to-open ‘smoked salmon and salt beef’ bar on Goodge Street. Expect Jewish diner classics (bagels, Reubens and hot chicken soup), six variations of cream cheese (including pink horseradish and cracked black pepper), all washed down with American beer and prosecco on tap.

But it’s not just about sandwiches à la Katz’s Deli. Londoners are reclaiming the sandwich with a GB twist. Want a sarnie but you’re an aristo? No fear, head to Harrods for a Tom Dixon Sandwich. Swap your Warburtons slices for a soft glazed roll, ham and cheese for poached lobster, and mayo for celeriac remoulade. Décor wise? Think brass lighting fixtures, upholstered club chairs, and marble-covered tables.

Then, there's the Gen Y set, who are fuelling late nights with sandwiches. Head to Max’s Sandwich Shop in Crouch Hill, for lashings of booze, fun tunes, a 3am license and, of course, sarnies. Thanks to the owner, Max Halley, and his creds (Salt Yard and LeCoq), said sarnies will be mega: think hot sandwiches stuffed with ham hock, braised beef, kimchi and deep fried broccoli. Plus, we hear, you should keep an eye out for guest chefs. And – news just in – Slap! is back. They’ll be slamming out sandwiches this Friday night upstairs at The Haggerston. If it’s anything like their Dalston Superstore residency, expect a menu of Bangh Mi Slowly’s and Pea Diddy’s.

Sandwiches vs. toasties: the war begins.
