This weekend we’ve got some money savers for you. From restaurants, a hotel offer and, well, more restaurants, this festive season doesn’t need to burn a hole in your pocket. And all the extra cash means all the more money for piscos and G&Ts. Oh, and if you’re reading this from your computer at home (self-employed, freelancers…), good news, there’s an Xmas party for you, too!

This Weekend’s Picks

• FRI Copita del Mercado • SAT Kitty Fisher’s • SUN The Green Prince

Freelancers Xmas parties

apparently it’s a thing now

Work from home but still want to jingle your bells and party like a nine-to-fiver? Pond Dalston is throwing a 1980s office shindig (photocopier included). Over in Notting Hill, the following night, Maxilla is doing it with Babe Heaven (London pop duo) at The Portuguese Working Mans Club. Two back-to-back office parties without a 9am start, luck be a freelancer.

FRIDAY

EAT:
Copita Del Mercado
  DRINK:
Pisco Embassy

Lovers of Copita Soho, make your way to Spitalfields, asap. Their second venture, Copita del Mercado, has officially opened, with a very generous soft launch offer of 25% off food until December 23. Here, unlike their Soho counterpart, portions are bigger (with mains such as tuna tartare, Iberico pork jowl, and lamb neck), the drinks list is more extensive (sherry, craft beer and balloon G&Ts) and for bonus points, they take bookings. Like we said, asap.   We love pisco. We love late nights. So of course we welcome the news of Pisco Embassy. Open between midnight and 5am, head here after hours for piscos-with-a-twist: the Chica Sour adds Peruvian purple corn syrup; the Embassy Punch adds pineapple juice; and the Oso Paddington, well, plays homage to the country’s most famous export with a touch of marmalade.

SATURDAY

BRUNCH:
Jago
  DINNER:
Kitty Fischer's

The brunch-volution is (finally!) in full swing. Can’t decide between a Thai Congee at The Pepper Tree or breakfast banh mi at Kêu Soho? Well, here’s another one for the mix. Enter Jago, a Middle Eastern and Ashkenazi restaurant via Louis Solley (ex-head chef at Ottolenghi in Notting Hill) and Hugo Thurston (former GM of Morito). Aside from the menu of grilled challah, labneh and rhubarb, baked eggs, and savoury scones with ricotta and paprika, we’ll be coming for the interior alone – a 60s space-age plastic fantastic greenhouse bubble. Oh yes!   Mayfair, we’ve missed you. But now, thanks to new restaurant Kitty Fisher’s (named after an 18th century courtesan), W1 is back on our radar. Tomos Parry (YBF’s Chef of the Year) takes charge of the grilled Basque menu, but unlike his previous residency at Climpson’s Arch, this is one sexy spot – think dimly lit via candelabras, deep charcoal hues, rouge velvet banquettes and antique cast iron fittings. We’re also loving the sound of the drinks list: Basque-style G&Ts (again with the balloon glasses), Bad Kitty cocktails, and ‘Overnight’ Bloody Marys. We’re not sure what’s in them, but if it’s good enough for Kitty…

SUNDAY

WATCH:
The Green Prince
  DO:
Christmas Film Club

If, like us, you marathoned Homeland, put this on your must-watch list. From the producers of Man on Wire and Searching For Sugar Man comes their latest big-hit doco, The Green Prince. Set against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, The Green Prince recounts the true story of the son of a Hamas leader who emerged as one of Israel’s prized informants. Think a tense psychological thriller in the form of a documentary. Now over to It’s a Wonderful Life…   We know, we know, It’s a Wonderful Life is not exactly revolutionary, but the Christmas Film Club at the Covent Garden Hotel is always a cosy watch, and baby, it’s cold outside. Plus, it’s not just about the movie: tickets include a two-course dinner or afternoon tea at hotel Brasserie Max. ‘Tis the season.
