A new food market, an outdoor gig, some new restaurants and a bit of partying… so our usual weekend buzz. Aside from that, we’ve been noticing some new activity happening in Covent Garden, we have a few things for the diary (including a rooftop water party and a kebab cook off) and a bit of Scientology. ‘Tis the freakin’ weekend.

EAT:
Breakfast at JosÉ Pizarro
  SEE:
Kwabs at Summer Series at Somerset House

Joy to our ears! José Pizarro has introduced a breakfast menu. This means grilled chorizo or jamon Iberico with fried eggs and patatas fritas, toasted sourdough with sobrasada, melted mahon cheese, oranges torrijas (French toast with orange sauce)… the only bad news: it’s only for the Broadgate bunch.   If you haven’t yet checked out the Summer Series at Somerset House, this is its last weekend. We say, go for live soul act Kwabs. The south London-born breakout star has toured with Kendrick Lamar, a top 40 single, released three EPs and an album out this summer. Enough said.

SATURDAY

DO:
Druid St Market
  EAT:
Paradise Garage

There’s a new market in Bermondsey for you foodies out there. Around the corner from Maltby and Borough Markets is where you’ll find the tightly curated Druid St Market. From the homemade drinking vinegars at Raw Duck and chinotto at Lardo to the famed Fat by Freddie toasties and po’ boys from Decatur London, you won’t leave hungry, thirsty or empty-handed. Go if only for the ice cream sandwiches from Blu Top (pictured above).   We love The Manor, we love The Dairy, so we’re excited for Paradise Garage, the new Bethnal Green restaurant by Robin Gill and co. Dine on mains such as barbequed sardines or lamb rump with sweetbreads or share a feasting “picnic” for the table, centred on rabbit (think roasted confit leg, turnover and offal). Pre or post drinks at neighbours Mission or Peg + Patriot are a must. Bethnal Green has officially stepped up.

HEALTH WATCH

Core Collective

Not to be compared with Skinny Bitch Collective (#strongnotskinny), this shiny new Kensington gym may not be that central, but is definitely worth travelling to. Highlights include the industrial vibe, great breakfasts, no member’s fee and overall decor. We love that you don’t have to wear the biking cleats, too. Classes are divided into three categories: velocity (interval training), resistance (TRX- ouch), and accelerate (spinning, they have bongos) and they’re still not rammed, which is nice.

Core Collective, 5 Phillimore Walk, Holland Park, W8 7RZ.

SUNDAY

SEE:
Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief
  PARTY:
Larry Levan Birthday Bash

Tom Cruise, brainwashing, Scientology, Katie Holmes… this is a documentary about Scientology (and a direct challenge to Tom Cruise) worthy of blockbuster status. See it this weekend at the newly opened Picturehouse Central. The art house cinema wins on all scores, including its upstairs restaurant and bar, designed by Martin Brudnizki (Soho House, The Ivy, The Holborn Dining Room…). Vue no more.   What a line-up! Farley and Heller, Francois Kevorkian, The 2 Bears, Justin Berkmann and many more play to celebrate the life of departed disco don Levan. One for the house and disco heads – and for newcomers looking for that original Studio 54 feeling – on a Sunday, of course. We wouldn’t expect anything less.
