Pre-recession decadence seems to be creeping back in this weekend with gold flaked dumplings, Versace, caviar and blinis. But for those looking to avoid the bling do so with grandma-style lasagne, 80s Chinese food and home-style Portuguese. Want to party? We have a new club in Clerkenwell to check out and a neighbourhood bar to hang at. Enjoy!

FRIDAY

EAT:
Beyond London
  DRINK:
Below & Hidden

Start the weekend on an indulgent note with a dinner of seabass and gold flake steamed dumplings, mixed bubbling and smoking sashimi and plum miso marinated Chilean seabass, washed down with elaborate cocktails by top mixologist Andy Mill, at Beyond London – Kensington’s newest restaurant and lounge. That’s One Kensington – so dress the part.   Beneath Bourne & Hollingsworth in Clerkenwell lies the tiny club, Below & Hidden. No bigger than an average living room, they’ve promised house party vibes but, well, with floor to ceiling LED light panels, DJs, bottled cocktails, and table service. Oh, and champagne sparkles are banned – part of the promise.

On our radar

Retro classics

Lately, London’s taste buds have been harking back to the past. Want to live life circa 90s pre-recession, head straight to 45 Jermyn St. for caviar and blinis, snails and champagne cocktails. 80s-style Chinese is du jour at Islington’s Chinese Laundry with their take on northern classics: think handmade rice cakes, bread dumplings, spring onion pancakes and traditional congees. Or, for 70s Brit classics like mama use to make, Coin Laundry in Clerkenwell will be doing chicken kiev’s, prawn cocktails and black forest trifles…

SATURDAY

EAT:
L.C. @ Climpson’s Arch
  DRINK:
Machine No.3

Out with Som Saa in with L.C. @ Climpson’s Arch – the latest pop up to call Climpson’s Arch home. Manned by chef Leandro Carreira, head in for his version of traditional Portuguese cooking such as smoked octopus, grilled cured cod and grilled pollock, with even some dishes straight from his mother’s kitchen. But, with a CV that includes Viajante and Mugaritz and collaborations with James Lowe of Lyle’s and Junya Yamasaki formerly of Koya – it’s not really home cooking.   Now to Clapton for the latest bar opening, Machine No.3. Billed as a neighbourhood cocktail joint by the folks behind The Three Compasses, the ex-laundrette on Well Street has a long and boozy menu with all the essentials: cocktails, beer, wine and fizz. DJs spin until 1am and food is kept simple with cheese and charcuterie boards. No fuss, no gimmicks.
