Best of 2015

2015, it’s been fun! Baos, bone broth, Sri Lankan cuisine and finally some late-night dining. As for 2016? We’re predicting fermented tea as the new health drink, deliveries will go into overdrive, and fitness will break the bank. Oh, and we’ve heard some exciting rumours about a few of our favourite restaurants. Let’s see!!

On our restaurant radar

We don’t like to gossip but… we’ve heard Blacklock may be set to take their juicy chops, incredible roast and power ballads to the east with a second site – we hope the drinks trolley makes the transfer. The guys behind the Palomar are opening a new restaurant in Covent Garden’s Neal’s Yard. Details are thin on the ground but expect a kitchen counter-only restaurant and deli next door. Moro has secured a second site on Hackney Road; rumour has it that it’ll be replacing Mr. Buckley’s. And lastly, The Hoxton Hotel is set for with two standalone food and beverage openings. The first: a dumpling restaurant (Dumpy Lynn), due to open in spring. The second? A possible tandoori shop. Move over fried chicken!

Drink Up

Bone broth no more

Cold press, bone broth and now Kombucha. In London, we may be a bit behind our American friends (who are already onto the Kombucha cocktails), but expect to see the fermented tea touted as the new health elixir for 2016. Drink it now at Mick’s Garage’s Kombucha bar (the only fermented tea bar in London, for now) in Hackney Wick, and choose from still and sparkling variations flavoured with ginger, fresh raspberry or passion fruit.

At Your Service

Deliveries

Hands down, the winning trend of 2015 that’s set to continue: deliveries. From Breakfast in Bed to Michelin-starred Supper to the huge expansion of Deliveroo, London’s delivery game has (finally!) picked up the pace. And it doesn’t stop there. After-hours delivery has just hit the capital via Feast, and Quiqup will not just deliver food but anything you’re after. Next? We don’t know when, but it can’t be long before UberEATS hits our capital. And don’t get us even started on booze deliveries. Oh, and for those yet to put up a Crimbo tree, Fantastic Services can have one delivered, installed and decorated.

Lost in Translation

Tokyo

All eyes are on Asia’s electronic music industry, and aside from the International Music Summit now in Shanghai and Singapore, it’s Tokyo that’s stealing the limelight – thanks, in part, to Richie Hawtin’s sake-tasting tour (check out his Instagram for the lowdown) and constant mentions by those in the know of the club, Womb (including, most recently, Jesse Rose on Pete Tong’s HOF). Indeed, if you’re heading over, Jamie Jones is playing on December 19…

Hemp, matcha, quinoa, açai – as a city, we’ve gone from naught to top on the fitness front, and it looks like globally it’s going to keep getting bigger and pricier. The recently launched Bodyism in Notting Hill by celeb trainer James Duigan (taken over from Tom’s, sniff) offers unlimited PT classes for the cool sum of £19,500 – that’s per year. Further afield, The BodyHoliday in St Lucia is relaunching in 2016 after a $20 million dollar makeover. Their BodyScience program includes DNA testing to leave you feeling top notch after a week – and it'll cost a pretty penny, too. And in 2018, Equinox is launching hotels, meaning you can forget gyms in hotels as an afterthought. Here, healthy everything – menus, mini bars, lighting, meditation channels – is the main focus. Fitting, considering their slogan, ‘It’s not fitness. It’s life.’ Indeed.
