Tonight

HOW TO GET PUBLISHED

Budding authors, take note: tonight begins a series of events for writers looking to get published. Think a Dragon’s Den for writers. Pitch your book idea to big dog publishers and agents in return for personal feedback or an offer to take things further. Tonight is for for cookery writers. And those attending will have the opportunity to pitch to Madeleine Shaw’s publisher followed by fiction with Lucy Malagoni (J.K Rowling) and crime with Frankie Gray (Paula Daly). Good luck!

How to get published, Paradise by way of Kensal Green, 19 Kilburn Lane, W10 4AE.
Thursday, January 21. £3 entry.

Top 5:

Venues To Pipe the Haggis

1. Merchant’s Tavern has it got it going on with haggis croquettes and whisky flights

2. Could there be better Burns Night collaboration than Quo Vadis and Milroy’s of Soho? We think not.

3. Go up tempo at the Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings’ Burns Night Party with whisky cocktails, ceilidh dancing and a five course banquet

4. Or, if one night of celebrations isn’t enough, Soho’s Mac & Wild has a week of festivities.

5. The Queen of Hoxton’s WigWamBam will have it all: fiddlers, Scottish fare and whisky tasting

EAT:PARTY:
BellangerUnicef Next Generation Party

Adding to Corbin and King’s portfolio of Grand cafes (The Wolseley, The Delaunay…) comes Belanger, a decadent Alsatian brasserie for a sultry winter’s dinner – think deep wood panelling, dim lighting and banquettes. Swap your usual Corbin and King staples of sausages and schnitzels for an Alsatian menu of tartes flambées and and les pots. In particular, the coq au riesling braised with mushrooms and onions comes highly recommended. If you haven’t already, tickets are still available for the annual Unicef Next Generation Party. The annual shake down is, this year, in support of Unicef’s Children of Syria Emergency Appeal. Held in Kensal Rise’s LOFT studios, with the likes of Everything Everything , Maribou State, Blonde, Kindness and Cirque du Soul taking you until 3am. Tickets are only £20 and the UK government will match all proceeds.

MAD ABOUT THE BOYBoundary Rooftop

Mad About The Boy, curated by ShowStudio editor Lou Stoppard, examines fashion’s obsession with youth, from the menswear perspective of Raf Simons, J.W. Anderson, Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent and Gosha Rubchinskiy – unpicking their work from current collections as well as select examples from the 1980s and 1990s. Minus temperatures calls for fondue by a fireplace, and Boundary Rooftop’s new Alpine menu is exactly that. The menu includes raclette, baked Vacherin Mont d’Or and fondue savoyarde, all served with mountain charcuterie, steamed potatoes and baguettes. Nab a spot by the open fireplace, request a blanket and rug up tight with a Vin Chaud in hand.

WOMEN: NEW PORTRAITSPoco

Another exhibition – but this one is about women. Celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz has finally unveiled Women: New Portraits, a project she started 15 years ago featuring “women of outstanding achievement”. Held in the disused Wapping Power Station, peruse portraits ranging from Adele, Amy Winehouse and Michelle Obama to Taylor Swift, Lena Dunham and Caitlyn Jenner – but bear in mind, this exhibition is far from complete. As the show tours, Leibovitz aims to add images of women in the host cities and regions. A truly global affair. There’s nothing like a few mimosas and Bloody Marys on a Sunday. And this weekend, we’re choosing Poco for just that. Make your way through their brunch menu of home smoked trout with poached eggs; their version of a Moroccan scramble with eggs and merguez; or go light with rhubarb, orange and honey yogurt with sprouted buckwheat and pumpkin seeds. And keep the beetroot Bloody Marys coming.
