TOP 5:

places for a date

1. Chiltern Firehouse, if only for its peachy and oh-so-flattering warm lighting

2. Or, for something more relaxed, we love counter dining, and The Palomar reigns supreme with good tunes and bustling vibes

3. La Bodega Negra… one… two… three tequila… need we say more?

4. Wine and toasties, it doesn’t get cosier than at Sager + Wilde Hackney Road

5. Or, go classic with a French meal at Petit Pois Bistrot, rounded off with cocktails downstairs

EAT:DRINK:
April’sPedro Almodóvar in Conversation at the BFI

A new café on Sloane Street has opened, part of new Chelsea Boutique 1, by Pablo Flack and David Waddington of Bistrotheque in Bethnal Green. Polenta bread with maple butter, eggs with labneh and dukka, fresh juice and strong coffee… this is what mornings were made for. Take a seat at the long low communal table, or pull up a stool at the marble counter and stay for lunch. Almodóvar fans will no doubt be excited for the filmmaker to take centre stage this Friday night at the BFI for a conversation about his career, his love of cinema and the influences that have shaped his unique cinematic style. It’s part of a wider retrospective of his films – from the early days of Pepe, Luci, Bom to his latest film, Julieta, and everything in between – which will be running until October. We’re excited!

EAT:DRINK:
Blanchette EastTHE GUINEA PIG CLUB

If you live east but are fans of Soho’s crispy frog’s legs, cheese beignets and the croque monsieur found at French tapas spot Blanchette, good news – they’ve opened a sister site on Brick Lane. The décor is Parisian belle époque mixed with an east end vibe – think exposed brick walls, vintage furniture and dimly lit with candles: a good second date kinda spot. London may not need another experimental cocktail club, but need is different from want – and this one sounds like a good addition, if only for its frozen hydrangea balls (pictured). Held every Friday and Saturday, the pop up cocktail club will be doing all kinds of technical cocktail concoctions tailored to the individual guest. But, really, they had us at frozen hydrangea balls. Space is limited, so book at guineapigclub@fractionflavours.com

THE LINE-UP AT TYPING ROOM:

English Wine Edition

We’re no experts but we do know the difference between a Chardonnay and Riesling, so when it comes to wine tastings, classes and holidays, we want something different (remember our wine trip to Slovenia?). That said, we don’t know much about our homegrown grapes – and apparently we’re not the only ones. So, next week, Town Hall Hotel will be popping the cork on English wines with a seven-course dinner. Think seven courses and seven pairings by five producers, one tea master and a bartender… Book here.

SHOP:WATCH:
MARIA TASH AT LIBERTYTHE GET DOWN

Famed for getting uneven, multiple ear piercings trending, Maria Tash has opened her first permanent store outside of the US. Aside from offering the cult faves from her Venus line, there’ll be newer models, like these opal beauties. And, before you ask, yes, piercings are available on site. Form an orderly queue… Finished Stranger Things? Now it’s time to binge on The Get Down, the new Netflix musical drama about the birth of hip hop. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, it follows the lives of South Bronx teenagers living in ‘70s New York. From the Soho art scene to the impoverished Bronx and Studio 54, expect nothing short of a mythical saga… with big hair.

Raving in Romania

Electric Castle, Romania

Ever been to Cluj, Romania? No, neither had we. But last month, with the excuse of checking out Electric Castle, the festival near Cluj that’s been shortlisted for three years in a row by the European Festival Awards for Best Medium Sized Festival, we made our first trip. We raved, we ate, we drove around in fast cars, we drank large amounts of lemonade and Aperol; read about how it went down here and start planning your first/next trip to Cluj.
