Weekend Guide September 9 - 11

Yes, we heard the Fabric verdict. And we’ve heard the different theories about what this closure is actually about. But now it’s just, what are we going to do about it? In the meantime, this weekend, we’ve got food on the mind. We’ve got a Peruvian new opening, a late-night breakfast in Notting Hill and a visiting Catalan restaurant to welcome. On the quirkier side of the menu, we’re trying out the new hybrid in town (cevushi, anyone?), washing cocktails down with edible grasshoppers and eating rosé – yes, eating. Enjoy!

This Weekend’s Picks

• FRI Burlock • SAT VQ Notting Hill • SUN Bar Brutal + Brawn

1. The plant-based trend continues and it’s no better than at Farmacy in Notting Hill

2. News just in, Rum Kitchen Notting Hill has had a revamp with a healthy brunch menu, to boot

3. Another one for the Notting Hill set, Farm Girl – if only for their dragon fruit ‘Pitaya Bowls’

4. If it’s a shopping pit stop you’re after, try Hemsley + Hemsley Café at Selfridges

5. For those morning afters, The Good Life Eatery is always a UJ fave – made even better now that it’s available for delivery

EAT:DRINK:
ButifarraBurlock

Grab a Peruvian sandwich for lunch at new fast casual eatery Butifarra. Named after the Peruvian street snack made from a bread roll with slow-cooked meat and salsa, choose from one of four fillings (beef short rib, slow cooked pork or chicken and chorizo), and one of the three traditional chilli based sauces (Anticucho, Pachamanca or Amarillo ketchup). Or, go straight for the sushi rolls filled with marinated fish: cevushi anyone? (Oh yes, they did.) We’ve got space for another rum bar in our life: welcome, Burlock. Channelling the republican era of Havana, the menu offers a range of speciality rums and a hearty list of cocktails (the almond butter colada sounds like a must and so, too, the Canchanchara for a twist on a daiquiri). But it’s the bar snacks that have us excited. Think Brazilian cheese buns, empanadas, molasses-glazed pork ribs and edible grasshoppers.

EAT:EAT:
SagardiVQ Notting Hill

Now over to the Basque country via new Shoreditch restaurant Sagardi. Staying true to the traditional Basque style of cooking, everything is flown in daily from San Sebastián with a special emphasis on fine cuts of beef known as “Txuletón” and whole fish cooked on the grill. For a lighter side of eating, simply pop in for some Donostia-style pintxos washed down with Basque country cider or Basque Txakoli wine. It’s about time Notting Hill got itself a late night dining option. Though not 24 hours like its two other outposts (Bloomsbury and Chelsea), its 3am closing time suits us just fine. Serving an all-day menu, including late night (or early morning) breakfasts, rise and shine W11!

You Say You Want A Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-1970Bar Brutal + Brawn

The Vietnam War, The Cold War, Nixon… fast forward to 2016 with Syria, Brexit, Trump and it’s all feeling a bit same same, but different generation. You say you want a revolution? Head to the V&A for its aptly named exhibition chronicling the impact of late ‘60s political activism through music, fashion and film. From Warhol to Woodstock, there’s a lesson in it for all. Celebrating La Fiesta de la Diada (Catalunya’s national day), Bar Brutal, one of our favourite spots in Barcelona, will be heading to London for a one-day takeover at Brawn – another UJ fave. This dream team collaboration will include a sharing lunch menu, plus an exclusively Catalan wine list for the day. Although lunch ends at 4pm, expect to keep going into the evening, fuelled by salty snacks and fast flowing vino and vermouth.
