Top 5 Halloween Happenings

1. If it’s a not-so-sensible dinner you’re after, book a table at Hoi Polloi for a “Hanging Out In Hell” dining and entertainment monster mash-up

2. Or if you’re after more of a Champagne clinking affair, head to the hellish Big Top at the Rumpus Room

3. Want to party? UJ fave B. Traits and Simian Mobile Disco will be on decks at the Krankbrother Halloween party

4. Alternatively, go underground to a Raveyard

5. Or, take in Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece The Shining at The Gate

Chivas Regal

Make your own signature blend

Out with frozen cocktails in with winter warmers, and there’s no better place to do so than at the Chivas Regal pop up bar, ‘The Blend’. Head in for some whisky-based cocktails before heading upstairs to the tasting stations to really get to know your whisky (grain vs. single malt, The Highlands vs. Lowlands…). And, if you want to mix your own blend to take home (and you do, trust us) book in for a one-hour blending session.

The Blend By Chivas Regal opens in the Truman Brewery on 3rd October until 4th December. Free entry. Experiences start at £15. Book your tickets to The Art of Blending here

EAT:DRINK:
VenetaBourne & Hollingsworth’s bar

For a taste of Venice (minus the canals), head to Veneta, the new, all-day Venetian restaurant from the Salt Yard Group, promising to channel the flavours of northern Italy into St James. Start with the raw bar before enjoying porcini and truffle risotto and baked scallops, but save room for the large plates, which includes the half-grilled octopus (pictured). Fitzrovia stalwart Bourne & Hollingsworth have revamped their bar. Gone are the teacups, peeled wallpaper, and rickety tables. The bar has grown up. Now, you’ll find a clash of period pieces and antique items, rich textiles and bespoke, bright wallpaper — but don’t worry, the ethos of fun times and cocktails ‘till late remains the same. Just order the Blue Wray’ falernum-laced Heisenberg Daiquiri to see what we mean.

ME Madrid Reina Victoria

Autumn is here and winter’s en route, so there’s no better time to escape to Madrid! Soak up the sunshine, sip on Tempranillo, hang in a square and visit the markets, great clubs and restaurants; it really is the perfect escape. And at ME Madrid, the roof is open all year and heated during winter (last weekend saw Ibiza Sonica live-streaming a soirée on Sunday). There are luxe spa treatments, great room service, movies on demand, and a cosy restaurant – you won’t want to leave the hotel! Book your trip now.

WATCH:EAT:
AmadeusFucina

Mozart isn’t for everyone, but a multiple Olivier and Tony award-winning play about the fictitious rise of the composer, embroiled in drama and power struggles is definitely worth a watch. Especially when it’s at the place where it first premiered in 1979, the National Theatre, with live orchestral accompaniment by the Southbank Sinfonia. Limited tickets are still available for the matinee on Saturday, but be quick or wait ‘till January. More Italian. This time in Marylebone and from Kurt Zdesar (founder of Chotto Matte and director of Nobu). Aside from pastas and pizzas, the real draw card is its wood-fired pit that roasts suckling pig, lamb and boar and large joints of meat. Plus, everything is made in house, from the bread, pastries, pasta and gelato to the home-cured charcuterie. Impressive.

Poke

‘Tis the year of poke. Ever since we first spied it on Bill Granger’s Granger & Co menu, it’s been a non-stop poke-thon. For an upmarket bite of the raw salad, try Black Roe in Mayfair. Matcha lovers should hit up Tombo Poké & Matcha Bar for a side of the green stuff served every which way. But, if it’s fast casual you’re after, give both Ahi Poké and Island Poké a poke (sorry!).

DRINK:EAT:
Zelman DrinksJikoni

With both Bad Sports and Zelman Drinks on our radar, it seems sports bars have made a comeback. So, if you’re partial to a bit of football on a Sunday, try Zelman’s. Unlike the typical lad hangouts, Zelman’s is industrial cool and, like its previous owners (RIP Silver Bullet), has live music. Cocktails are reasonably priced and it’s right next to a station with the 24-hour tube – so add this to your list of casual late-night hangouts, too. BLTs with apple kimchi, spicy fishcakes and pina colada pancakes. Sound good? Then head to Jikoni for their new weekend brunch. The restaurant, helmed by food writer Ravinder Bhogal, is inspired by global cuisine spanning Britain, East Africa, the Middle East, and Asia – with, of course, her own variations (did we mention pina colada pancakes?). Drinks look interesting, too – think Tamarind Mary’s and gin and cucumber lassies.
