What a week. (What a year!) We’re eating up a storm this weekend, starting with a Japanese brasserie on Friday, followed by a lil’ party at a new and exciting live music venue. On Saturday, you’ll find us with a set of beef ribs, then cocktailing it up. Sunday, we’ll be swotting up on the best. hair. ever. before digging into yet more barbecued meat. Enjoy.

EAT:PARTY:
AnzuOmeara

We like ramen, we like brasseries, so it’s no surprise that we like Anzu, the new Japanese brasserie in St. James, courtesy of the guys behind Tonkotsu (which we also like – a lot). Kick off the weekend with a pear and lavender bellini (yum) before moving on to the king crab and pork gyoza, Wagyu fillet tataki carpaccio, and their speciality teikoshu sets, which include your choice of a range of katsus or teriyakis served with rice, salad, miso soup, and pickles. With all the closures (no, we’re clearly still not over Fabric), it’s nice to see a new opening for a change. Omeara is the intimate new London Bridge venue from Mumford and Sons’ band member Ben Lovett, playing host to club nights, comedy, burlesque, and magic shows and more – including Amir Alexander’s return to the decks tonight with his signature gritty take on classic New York, Chicago and Detroit sounds.

If you still don’t know your malts from your grains, head to the Chivas Regal pop up whisky bar, ‘The Blend’ at the Truman Brewery. The nine week pop up has turned us into experts (Highlands vs Lowlands to the tasting notes of the different regions… we can hold our own). Or, if you already know your stuff, go one step further and blend your own. But, really, when all is said and done, it’s simply a good spot for a winter warmer dram or two.

The Blend By Chivas Regal opens in the Truman Brewery on 3rd October until 4th December. Experiences start at £15. Book your tickets here.

EAT:Drink:
SmokestakBYOC East

Even street food vendors eventually grow up and settle down. Case in point: Smokestak, the Street Feast fave, has opened a permaspot in Shoreditch. And the food’s grown up a bit, too. Sure, there may no longer be the popular pulled pork (owner David Carter says you can find it everywhere in London these days, which is true), but there are still ribs, brisket, plus new dishes like crispy beef shin with anchovy mayo and smoked girolles on beef dripping toast. If you find yourself pouring a cocktail at home, thinking, if only I knew how to make something different… well, stop pouring and bring that bottle to the new BYOC East. Here, it’s all about cocktail expertise thanks to real bartenders with actual talent (no offense) in a speakeasy atmosphere: think dim lighting, homemade purees and mixers, and a basement venue (but of course).

THE PRINCIPAL MANCHESTER

What happens when a new hotel group, Principal, teams up with The Sunday Times Style to bring a train load of (fun) Londoners up to the newly refurbed Principal Manchester for a sleepover, complete with a sparkling dinner and tunes by Mark Ronson, Sink the Pink and Horse Meat Disco? It’s a party! And a party it was. UJ loved a lot of things about the hotel, too. The 270 loft-style rooms and suites by Michaelis Boyd Architects were extremely spacious by city standards and came complete with tuck shop boxes (gratis), thick robes, and leather reading chairs. Other highlights included the Refuge restaurant with Middle Eastern-inspired sharing bites, the festoon-lit XXL smoking terrace, the chic flower shop, and proximity to the train station. Manchester, we’ll be baaaaaack!

SEE:EAT:
Hair by Sam McKnightTemper

Kate, Linda, Christy, Naomi, Cindy: he’s coiffed them all, and then some. The latest exhibition at Somerset House explores the four-decade career of Sam McKnight, the man behind the hair – and by hair, we mean the hair on more Vogue covers than any other artist, the catwalk hair at Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and more, and the hair on the late, great Princess Di. Now for more barbecue. The long-awaited solo joint from chef Neil Rankin (Smokehouse and the original Pitt Cue) has now opened, and the dual-concept space celebrates all things meat. Downstairs, cuts of beef, pork, and lamb are sold and barbecued by the 100g, with plenty of starters and sides to go with, while the tiny, seven-seat taco bar upstairs is where the bones, drippings and fat go for tortillas, butters and broths.
