Italy's Second Coming

Italian food in London may be nothing new – Venetian at Polpo, classics at Cecconi’s, gelato at Gelupo – but there’s a new wave of Italian restaurants mixing things up. From Venetian breakfast plates to Moorish, Italian and British inspired ravioli, this is Italian – but not as you know it.

First up, Veneta, the fifth restaurant from the Salt Yard group (Salt Yard, Dehesa, Opera Tavern, Ember Yard) that specialises in Venetian plates. Traditionalists should come for their lunch and dinner menu of classics: bigoli with sardines, charcoal-grilled monkfish and polenta with girolles. We’ll be trying their spin on breakfast such as baked eggs with spinach, tomato ragu, speck and basil.

Next, we have Popolo (no, that’s not a typo and no, there’s no relation to London’s other favourite Venetian restaurant, Polpo). Taking up residence on Shoreditch’s Rivington Street, Popolo fuses Spanish tapas with Italian and Moorish flavours. Dine on labneh with fried olives, chickpeas and morita chilli, salt cod tempura, pan roast quail and burnt honey panna cotta.

Lastly, we have Luca, the Clove Club’s Italian venture that’s set to open at the end of the month. The concept is Italian with British produce, meaning grouse and whisky ravioli, Cornish fritto misto and tortelloni in pheasant broth. Or, if you’re after the lighter side of dining out, take a seat at the snack bar for beef carpaccio with oysters. Oh, and just a heads up, the booking lines have already opened – go!

Buon appetito!
