The Culturist

London’s cultural highlights this March

Open your diaries now, because March is going to be a busy one. Electronic music lovers rejoice, because this month’s Culturist is packed full of it: a collaboration between Melt and Printworks, Heidi at Phonox, and the 2017 edition of Convergence are all coming up. For an art injection, make sure you see the Josef Albers exhibition in its last week, or travel further afield for something a little different.

GO:
Melt x Printworks London
. . .
We love a good collab. Pioneering electronic festival Melt pairs up with UJ fave Printworks for one night only, with two rooms full of stellar acts. Although long established, Melt is renowned for its eclectic artist line-ups, and it’s no different here. Chris Libeling, Kiasmos, Mind Against and Tommy Four Seven all make appearances throughout the night. Plus, it’s an all-dayer so no late-night hangovers.
. . .
£32.50, March 18th, 12pm-10pm. 1 Surrey Quays Road, London, SE16 7PJ

SEE:
Josef Albers, Sunny Side Up
. . .
It’s the last week to catch Sunny Side Up, a selection of paintings from Bauhaus professor and artist Josef Albers. Exploring his use of the colour yellow throughout five decades of his career, pop in on a lunch break for a dose of culture that’ll brighten your mood.
. . .
Until 10th March, Tues-Sat 10am-6pm, 24 Grafton Street W1S 4EZ

EAT:
Stevie Parle’s Thursday FEASTS
. . .
You need a really good excuse to get UJ over to Greenwich, and Stevie Parle’s monthly FEASTS are just that. Launching this month, each themed dinner sees Parle team up with a celebrated chef – this month it’s Michelin-starred Shaun Hill. It’s £45 per person for 4 courses and a drink, what more do we need to say?
. . .
Thursday 9th March, Peninsula Square, London SE10 0SQ. Please call 020 8465 5910 for reservations

BOOK:
Mondrian Doha, Qatar
. . .
Whether it’s for a quick drink at the Dandelyan or a sleepover in one of their boutique rooms, #UJLoves the London Mondrian. So we can’t wait for the hotel’s latest opening in Doha this spring. We hear it’s been designed by Marcel Wanders, and will be a fusion of his unique style and local culture, inspired by Middle Eastern folk tales. Think ornate stained glass, mosaics and impressive pillars.
. . .
Opening soon, room rates at Mondrian Doha will start from $240 (£190)

HEAR:
Convergence 2017
. . .
If electronic music is your thing, then make sure you check out Convergence festival’s line-up of events, taking place at various London venues from the 21st-25th of this month. Highlights include Rival Consoles, Actress, Mica Levi and Jacques Greene, plus sessions and talks curated by Mixcloud.

21st-25th March, view all events and book tickets here

TRAVEL:
Desert X, Coachella Valley
. . .
We’re used to seeing Coachella Valley in festival season with its iconic big wheel and hoards of screaming music fans, but Desert X is about to use LA’s famous desert landscape in a whole new way. For the next two months, Coachella Valley will be transformed into a site-specific art exhibition, with a mix of artists exploring themes related to the location. Stop by the Desert X Hub at the nearby Ace Hotel in Palm Springs to pick up your map and go explore.
. . .
Until 30th April, times vary according to installation

. . .

DANCE:
Heidi at Phonox
. . .
Sometimes the worlds of dance and techno feel a bit male-orientated, but Heidi has been changing all that for the past decade. Catch the Radio 1 DJ and Jackathon pioneer on the decks at Phonox at the end of this month – we recommend booking now.
. . .
9pm-4am, 418 Brixton Road Brixton London SW9 7AY

. . .

SHOP:
Gucci x Donald Duck
. . .
Gucci have done it again with another must-have collab. After pairing up with Peanuts in previous seasons, they’ve now launched a Donald Duck capsule, featuring tees, hoodies, knitwear and sneakers. The mainline might be all about elegant opulence, but now Alessandro Michele is showing his fun side.

Prices vary, shop the capsule online at Gucci
