The Culturist

London’s cultural highlights this July

High summer starts now! Time to cool off with Diébédo Francis Kéré’s indigo blue Serpentine Pavilion, a trip to our new fave taqueria Del 74, and an escape to Musée d’Arts de Nantes. Or, if you’re in the mood for a bit of a read, we’re celebrating 4th of July with a round-up of our favourite independent record labels. Now it’s time to get cultural.

SEE:
COS x Serpentine Park Nights
. . .
We’re sure you’ve seen photos of Diébédo Francis Kéré’s striking indigo blue Serpentine Pavilion by now, but make sure you take the time to get down there for the COS x Serpentine Galleries Park Nights and see it lit up at dusk. The series focuses on site-specific events from artists, choreographers and filmmakers including Tamara Henderson, Black Quantum Futurism and Shen Xin.

Selected Friday evenings throughout summer

TRY:
Cantina Del 74
. . .
They only opened Clapton’s Del 74 four months ago, but Enrique Vivas and Jorge Felizardo aren’t hanging around. Having become a firm local favourite for their cochinita pibil and fish tacos, they’ve just opened their brand new sister site, Cantina Del 74. Tucked away behind Helgi’s bar, #UJLoves the pared-back, neon-infused decor and insanely moreish Acapulco-style shrimp cocktail tacos and Botana de brisket. We say start with a jug of the guava frozen margarita and see where the night takes you.

Wed- Sat 6pm-11pm
Helgi’s, 17 Mare Street, E8 3RH

TRAVEL:
Musée d’arts de Nantes
. . .
The Musée d’Arts de Nantes is back open after six years with a new £42 million design renovation to boot. Marble hallways now fit alongside glass walls and fabric ceilings, as well as a new 4,000 square metre Cube exhibition space, sculpture garden and 17th century chapel. Inside the gallery you’ll find Claude Monet, Nan Goldin, Anish Kapoor and Marina Abramovic. Time to hop on that Eurostar!
. . .
Open Wed- Mon: 10am-7pm
10 Rue Georges Clemenceau, 44000 Nantes, France

EAT:
Meraki Fitzrovia
. . .
When a new restaurant from the Waney family (The Arts Club, Roka, Zuma) appears, UJ takes note. They’re branching out from modern Japanese cuisine to bring some Hellenic hospitality to Great Titchfield Street. Led by Greek chef Dimitrios Siamanis, Meraki’s menu reads like the edible highlights of the land: bottarga from Mesologgi, graviera cheese from Naxos and slow-cooked ox cheek with hilopites from Dimitrios’ home region of Trikala.
. . .
12pm-1am every day
80-82 Great Titchfield Street, W1W 7QT

HEAR:
Southbank Centre New Music Biennial
. . .
Southbank Centre presents an entire weekend of new music, free concerts and workshops. The Biennial works as a snapshot of contemporary music in the UK, taking over the entire Southbank site, meaning it’s a great excuse to mix up your playlist with some not-so-familiar sounds. We’ll be listening out for new work from Mica Levi for the BBC Concert Orchestra, as well as performances from Klein and Mercury Prize-nominated GoGo Penguin.

7th-9th July
Tickets are free but booking is required

Wimbledon is here! So naturally, UJ’s got sport on the brain and we’re dressing the part. Ladies, opt for Nike’s Thea Ultra, Tory Sport’s striped jacket and Fendi’s ultra-cute skirt. For the guys, it’s a simple pair of drawstring shorts, a Gucci polo and a classic pair of Stan Smiths.

PLAY:

. . .

Head to Bloc on the 22nd for a night of dancing in the dark to Joe, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Roosevelt. We’ll be on the floor until 6am, see you there.
