Udon noodles in simple surroundings

Time your visit carefully if you want to get a table at Koya. Popular since its launch in 2010, this simple noodle joint knows how to attract a crowd (despite the basic benches and sparse décor). Sample the authentic udon served in a rich broth and you’ll be hooked (ask for a slowly poached egg for a richer experience). Team with Echigo rice beer or homemade hot ginger tea.

Top Tip:

If you’re not in the mood for udon, order the ‘fish & chips’ – cod tempura and lotus root chips.
