Bags of Manliness

The rise of the man bag has been one of the great fashion success stories of recent times. Which begs the questions, how on earth did we carry our books, gym kit and personal communication devices before these useful babies came along? Anyone's guess. What we do know, there is now the kind of choice women have enjoyed for years. We like that.  Here are our favourites.

Paul Smith

Is there nothing Paul Smith won't print on a bag, wallet or shirt? This Union Jack print canvas hold-all adds wit and not a small dose of style to your outfit. £225

Mulberry
Secure zipped pockets, and over-the-shoulder style make this large 'Warren' messenger bag one of Mulberry's most useful urban carry-alls. £495

Le Sports Sac
With padded section for a lap top  and secure Velcro-fastened pockets, the Brake Messenger from Le Sports Sac is a functional piece of kit for communicators on the move. Approx £60

The North Face
Even action men need to carry their stuff and sometimes there just aren't enough pockets. The Flyweight tote from The North Face in PU coated nylon comes in four cool colours and enough room to carry your entire base camp. £24.99

Etro
Made of the kind of leather that, like a vintage Burgundy, just gets better with age, this Etro hold-all is as good for your gym kit or a weekend away. Unlike that vintage  Burgundy. £470

We’re taught from an early age that the sexes are segregated. Pink and blue baby bumf. Male and female toilets. His ‘n’ hers hotel slippers. And now boutiques are going their separate ways too with single sex dedicated offerings.

July's shop windows are all about escapism.

Following a slew of designer documentaries, has fashion lost its mystery?

  • Life Lite

Living life in lite – or existence.com, the beta version – takes small bits of the good stuff before deciding on the full whack. Like buying the Gucci key-ring instead of the bag. Before you plump for Life 2.0, dip your toe in and install the tester for a tiered existence.

  • Down by the Sea

There's nothing like the promise of a sunshine-filled beach break to get the credit card receipts flowing. After all, nobody goes on holiday without a new bag/pair of flip flops/designer shorts, do they? Even if you're only planning a trip down to the local lido, do it in style with UJ's top picks of the best summery products. Time to get sandy.
