Pick 'n' Flicks

After yet another washout bank holiday, just as the weather doesn't have a ruddy clue what it's doing, the world of film is looking equally temperamental. At this perennial time of year where Hollywood doesn't quite know what to do with itself, as Samantha Jones once warned: "ladies, it's slim pickings out there."

The torrent of Sex and the City trailers may have already revealed too much, but the special screening at the Electric Cinema boasts enough cosmos and canapés to drive out those wretched spoilers. And even if the early reports may not be exactly raving, you'd have to be a fool to miss out. Or a man.

Boys, tired of such girlish cinema tomfoolery? Then the merest mention of the Barbican's 'Best of Bond Weekend' should promise both simultaneous respite and revenge (and yes, there will be martinis served pre-film; and yes, they will be shaken, so no need to make more of a fool of yourself).

But finally, if all this gender-determined film nonsense still isn't doing it for you, close your eyes, grab each other's hand, and head to the Secret Cinema for some good ol' fashioned mysterious entertainment. And no, there are no trailers for that. Mystery, remember?

Sex and the City at Electric Cinema - June 6-18
The Best of Bond Weekend at The Barbican - June 7-8
Secret Cinema - May 29

Last week I got dumped. By text. Three times. By the same person. Which is curious when you consider that a) I haven’t seen her for at least a year, and b) we never even went out because c) she’s my cousin. Turns out the texts weren’t meant for me. Being at the top of most folks’ phonebooks leaves one with, let us say, a ‘lively’ inbox.
