Sonar 2008 - Day One
Hello Old Friend
Many of us here at Camp UJ have been going to Sonar since ’98. So this being our 11th year in attendance, we had our own belated decade of Sonar celebration (drinks!).
The festival has changed - a lot - throughout the years; the nightime portion was actually on the beach years ago, instead of the airport hangar that is now home to Sonar night, but several things - namely the quality music, quirky advertising, and focus on innovation and industry - have stayed the same.
The below is Simon O'Connell’s three day overview of his time spent at this year’s Sonar festivities.
DAY ONE
Sonar: shortly after kick off, day one: people wander round looking for something to do, decide to take a pew on the ubiquitous Astroturf. We settle in for some profound head nodding and checking out of talent. Later we marvel at displays of vintage Walkmans, wondering how they are already (how old are we?), and presented as such, museum pieces. Later more head nodding, beer drinking, and checking out of talent. We see a hip-hop group (Chacho Brodas) who do Paid in Full but are not Eric B and Rakim; and a rocky band whose stage energy (Deepfried|) highlights the fact that someone twiddling their knobs does not make visually interesting entertainment. Manu Gonzalez and Vidal Romero made grindy, clunky interesting noises; while Little Dragon and DJ2D2 keep heads nodding, again, in the Village.
