French Invasion

Ah, the infamous French palate; that legendary sense of culinary distinction. Who else but our European cousins could convince the world that amphibian legs were a delicacy?

But alas, all is not going so well for our gastronomic superiors. Their beloved escargots are disappearing. Their poor, sexually-confused frogs are likewise fading out – taking their limbs with them. And now, like a bizarre curse from the heavens, the adored French oysters are dropping like flies. Or at least dead oysters.

Whilst ‘rats from a sinking ship’ might be pushing the boundaries of both reality and European amity, has anyone else noticed the apparent Gallic influx?

Within a scarce couple of months, we’ve gained the excessive Frenchness of Brasserie Saint-Jacques, the culinary perfection of Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, the charm of Le Cassoulet, and the curious punctuation of Bord’eaux. Jean-Christophe Ansanay-Alex’s new Ambassade de l'Ile has certainly upped the ante – if only in absurdity. And whilst its cuisine errs more on the side of opulent Pan-Asian, the Parisian institution of Buddha Bar is finally opening its London doors next Thursday.

So, whilst the dearth of French delicacies may have nothing to do with our recent rise in culinary Francopresence (like omnipresence, but with a sexier accent) … if you notice a curious molluscoid deficit this summer, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

ALSO IN EAT & DRINK

  • Cheesey

Maybe it's just us, but have you noticed how many of the best new pub openings are parading their cheese around as stinkily as a rugby team with its boots off?

  • UJ COMPETITION: Win a Moscow Mule Cocktail Kit Courtesy of Smirnoff

Feeling Mulish now that summer’s over? Then you need a Moscow Mule Cocktail Kit courtesy of Smirnoff to turn you from cocktail amateur to mixology aficionado.

  • The Fat Lady Sings

And then, apparently it’s all over. Wander through Covent Garden Market when the opera crew is in full force, and you begin to appreciate the reality of the proverb. And if it’s not her, it’s the plump, bearded Fakerotti. Or the thin scowling lady with the big lungs.

  • Wine Chap's Wine Tips: El Bulli / Drink Like a Man

People don't make the pilgrimage to Bulli for the wines, any more than you used to go to Ronnie Scott's for the food, or the Sistine Chapel for the crush of tourists; but these factors will normally play a part in your visit.

  • Sweet Potato Fries with Parsley Salt

I like to cut sweet potato fries ‘shoestring’ style so that they are super thin and crispy. You can do this by hand but it is far easier to use a mandoline to get them all the same size and shape so that they cook evenly.
