Eating New York: Small Plates Grazing

The American concept of ‘small plates’ eating is huge in New York. These are wonderful places to pull up a stool at the bar, order a glass of wine and graze your way through their small plates menus offering everything from plates of home-cured duck prosciutto to rosemary and speck beignets.

Terroir

This 24 seater, rock ‘n roll wine bar with its graffiti covered menus and ‘reign of terroir’ slogan is a fantastic place to experience small plates dining. Graze your way through duck ham, mushroom and taleggio panini and veal and ricotta meatballs while listening to the barman’s Ipod playlist.

Gottino

This friendly and rustic wine bar with a few tables out in the garden serves terrific small Italian plates and charcuterie cut to order on the meat slicer on the long marble bar. This is a great place to start an evening with a bellini and a plate of speck and rosemary bigne or to kill a few hours snacking on bruschetta with ricotta, mint and fava beans, pizzette with ham and figs, or a few salads made with ingredients bought at the morning’s greenmarket.
Don’t forget to order some gelato here which is made at the wonderful Capogiro gelateria in Philadelphia.

Casellula

Casellula is a small restaurant serving wine, artisanal American farmstead cheese and microbrewed beer from Red Hook’s Six Point Craft Ales. All the dishes on the menu here incorporate cheese in one way or another including rarebit served in an Amish pretzel to a pig’s ass sandwich with Fiscallini cheddar and chipotle aioli. Save room for dessert - a slice of rich moist chocolate cake which your server will pour a small glass bottle of Meadowbrook Farm cream over while you sit and drool.

The Ten Bells

This place is listed in my blackberry as the ‘no name place with duck tartare’. The Ten Bells is a very low-key wine bar with no sign and a chalkboard menu of only organic wines along with cheese, charcuterie and small plates including an amazing duck tartare.
