The Science of Invention

I am obsessed with JML, those creators of seemingly simple things you never knew you needed: seminal items like Toastabags (pure cheese-nius), Bobble Off (sweater-iffic), and Pedegg (tootsie-tastic). So if these genii can make a fortune, then I figure I need to explore all aspects of my creative side and start taking my financial fate into my own hands.

With sites like CrowdSpring and SitePoint offering freelance design work which you can pitch for online – essentially waging an internet war with other artists keen on the same job – and elance.com doing much the same for journalism, we figure it’s time to put ourselves out there.

For those of you less trusting of the ephemeral online marketplace, Liberty is hosting an Open Design Day tomorrow, judging the wares of budding designers and creatives to help reshape the iconic store. Entries may be closed for this season, but get inspired and sign up for Autumn’s open call. And if fashion’s more your thing, both Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden and Topshop’s New Gen sponsorship are open for applications until May 1st.

Finally, for any actual inventors out there who have their mad scientist laugh down and watch re-runs of Inspector Gadget on repeat, MI5 is seeking a new Chief Scientific Advisor. In effect, a Q for the home office.

Bet he’d come up with a cracking piece of JML kit.

Living life in lite – or existence.com, the beta version – takes small bits of the good stuff before deciding on the full whack. Like buying the Gucci key-ring instead of the bag. Before you plump for Life 2.0, dip your toe in and install the tester for a tiered existence.

There's nothing like the promise of a sunshine-filled beach break to get the credit card receipts flowing.
