Property Spy: Architects for Charity

Following last month’s Property Spy about good architecture and design, and the frustration of London property buyers, it seemed fitting to bring the charitable ‘Architect in the House’ initiative to your attention.

Set up by the Royal Institute of British Architects and Shelter, the marvelous homeless charity, the premise is that for a mere £40 (which gets donated to Shelter) you can get a one-hour consultation with any of the British RIBA chartered architects signed up to the scheme, who will come to your house and run you through the architectural options of what you could do with your property, covering anything from planning permission to loft conversions.

One architecture firm signed up to the scheme is Studio-Q Architects based in Notting Hill, who are doubling their efforts and offering 2 hours of professional consultation if you sign up with them directly. These are the same creative experts who helped design the redevelopments of King’s Cross and Paddington Stations, the Eden Project in Cornwall and the Hong Kong International Airport – so they’re more than qualified and will certainly bring inspiration to any residential or commercial project you may be considering.

It is a no-obligation meeting so you can take from it what you need. However you may find that they come up with something that you never even thought possible. And all in the name of charity.

Marvellous as it may be, technology has yet to become truly holiday friendly. Sure iPads can tell you the state of the stock markets, but they certainly can’t keep themselves afloat. So for your perfect vacation companion, head down to your newsagents tomorrow and invest in a copy of the inaugural MONOCLE newspaper.

  • UJ Dates

Is it a terrible idea to talk about sex on a first date? How far should a dating agency go to make our romantic dreams come true? And just how long should you wait before you give in and text? Urban Junkies’ token singleton embarks on a quest to test the capital’s top dating agencies and find ‘the one’. Or a ‘one’. Or anyone. Hey, times are tough. But then so is our girl.

Where would a quintessential British Summer be without Glasto, Henley and Wimbledon, hmm? But before you hot-step it to Henman Hill or plant your pegs in the mud, we’ll let you in on this year’s secret. It’s all happening in other people’s backyards…

  • Knight in Shining Lager

The sun is shining. You’re safely installed in your neighbour’s garden/ local park/ nearest green patch with beats, banter, and booze. When suddenly night hits, and you’re dry as a nun’s gusset. Time to call in the cavalry.
