Culture Vultures

We want to be grown ups when it comes to cultural outings. Take in some art, learn about a foreign culture, check out how dinosaurs mate, etc. But this tiny, nagging voice in our head still says, ‘At least there’s the gift shop’.Culture Vultures

Let’s face it - after five hours of looking at stuff you can’t have, it’s hard not to want to cart something home, even if it is just the attractive guide (person, not pamphlet).

Bringing together the wares from over 60 cultural institutions, Culture Label offers an online portal into a huge virtual gift-shop, offering design savvy stuff as carefully curated as the exhibitions themselves.

The list of names is fairly extensive, from stalwarts like the V&A, Tate & ICA to lesser-knowns including The Royal Parks Foundation (great designer deckchairs ), galleries like The Serpentine and Whitechapel offering the ‘own art' initiative (letting you spread the cost with 0% interest), and forward thinking boutiques like Beyond The Valley.

Consumerists, us? Why yes, we are. And we’re loving our Anne Boleyn knickers , thanks for asking.

  • Behind Closed Doors

You catch the title and immediately it's head-in-the-gutter. Spy ring scandals; depraved acts of Jimmy Choo-toting auto-asphyxiation; that nameless big-wig who (allegedly) flooded his London hotel suite under the drug-addled assumption that he was in fact a beaver. Well, behave, children. We're talking art here.

  • Two Faced

We just can't shake our love for public spaces having a darker side. Which is why we're all about Somerset House's new Tom Dixon-designed Bombay Sapphire Dusk Bar.

  • Should I stay? Or should I go (out)?

No real city-dweller can resist the draw of a spot of fine weather. Which is why the cultural world is working double-time to keep us happily engaged indoors. Here’s our rundown of the best artistic distractions this month.

  • Art Attack

Tapping into the springtime wardrobe reshuffle, the V&A have finally relocated their theatrical costume collection, while Miu Miu have been touting a cute exhibition space. But the meaty icing on the art cake must be the new Haunch of Venison.
